Screening: “The Sound of Masks“: A tribute to Atanásio Nyusi

A tribute screening of “The Sound of Masks“ (2018), directed by award winning filmmaker Sara Gouveia.
The documentary film follows the history of Mozambique through the eyes (and life) of the late and legendary Mapiko dancer, choreographer and storyteller Atanásio Nyusi, who passed away in November 2022. “The Sound of Masks“ celebrated its world premiere at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) in 2018. The publication “Africa is a Country“ described it as “a visual meditation on the nature of memory in postcolonial societies”.
This event will be supported by a screening of “Transient”, a short film by artist PURE, as well as a performance intervention titled ‘’threading the energies’’ by musicians Kechou and Arawak Tausi.

Sara Gouveia is an award winning filmmaker based in Cape Town, South Africa. Her films have strong visual aesthetics and explore the line between fiction and reality. Sara was an alumna of the Durban Film Mart, IDFA Summer School, Hot Docs Blue-Ice Lab, DocLisboa’s Nebulae and Berlinale Talents.
PURE is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Berlin. Her practice engages and activates the sensory codes developed in the space of what is inarticulable within the limited parameters of western thought about blackness. Her work languages the unlanguagable, exploring notions of alienation, transitions and transcendence, redefining epistemologies of resistance from a deeply intimate place.
Arawak Tausi (Emmanuel Girondin) is a performer, musician and artist based in Berlin. His practice combines many genres including jazz, afrobeat and an electronic sound experimentation.
Kechou (Kerim Becker) is a musician based in Berlin, working in the realm of electro-acoustic blends of sounds and timelines.
