SUMMARY:Threads of Resilience | Film Screening + Talk | Silent Narratives: Unveiling the Unheard
DESCRIPTION:Organised by Jüdische Stimme + Pa_allies \nFilm screening followed by a talk by Dr. Anna-Esther Younes\, Salah Said (Pa_allies)\, Udi Raz (Jüdische Stimme) \nThe NGO "Breaking the Silence" - BtS for short - is made up of former Israeli servicemen and women who want to draw attention to everyday military life and the treatment of the population in the occupied territories by collecting personal memoirs. With her film\, director Silvina Landsmann provides a look behind the scenes of a controversial group with a controversial approach in the midst of a conflict that has been smouldering for over 70 years. \nWhat makes a good soldier? The ability to follow orders without scruples or the consideration of higher moral goals when dealing with the enemy? For many members of BtS\, the latter was only possible after their active military service. In their work\, they deal with missions and actions that seem wrong to them today. They address the Israeli population and foreign media with videos\, lectures and city tours. On the streets of Hebron\, there are repeated clashes between BtS\, Israeli settlers and the military. The organisation is also sharply criticised at a political level. It is accused of fabricating stories\, damaging Israel's reputation and playing into the hands of anti-Semitism. With sober filmic images\, Landsmann observes how the group fights for its voice\, both externally and internally.  \nTickets: Donation-based\nPlease register for this event here\nLanguage: The documentary film will be shown with German subtitles. The panel discussion will be held in English.\nRoom: Main Hall \nBiographies \nAnna-Esther Younes \nDr. Anna-Esther Younes is a scholar of race critical theories\, using psychoanalytic approaches and post-/colonial theory. In 2016\, she received a summa cum laude for her PhD thesis “Race\, Colonialism and the Figure of the Jew in a New Germany” from IHEID (Geneva\, CH\, 2015). Younes defines her work through the (anthropological) concept of “researching home” and “researching up to power”. Younes also holds the position of a lay judge in Berlin's youth court and has founded and organized the Colloquium of Color in Berlin for several years. Her academic\, journalistic and policy work can also be found on academia.edu. \nWebsite \nSalah Said (pa_allies) \nSalah Said\, a Berlin-based Palestinian\, became known in Berlin through his "WorldCitizen e.V." association\, a non-profit organisation that focuses on diversity & inclusion and youth education. Salah studied political science and sociology\, worked in sustainability for 9+ years in companies such as SCHUFA\, SAP\, Zalando\, and Klarna and supported young entrepreneurs such as "Tip Me" and "Conflictfood" at "Social Impact". He is a member of a group of volunteers from Berlin\, Palestinians and allies (Instagram: @Pa_allies) who stand in solidarity with Palestine and are committed to liberation and justice. \nUdi Raz (Jüdische Stimme) \nUdi Raz is a doctoral fellow at the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies. There she investigates the contemporary self-understanding of Germany\, as a nation state\, as emerges through public attempts to regulate encounters beween 'Muslims' and 'Jews'. She grew up in Haifa\, between Tel-Aviv and Beirut. Her work is shaped by local and global\, anti- and decolonial\, as well as queer liberation movements. She has lived in Berlin since 2010\, where she first studied Culture and History of the Middle East and then Islamic Studies at the Free University Berlin. Raz is a board member of the Germany based organization Jewish Voice for Just Peace in the Middle East. \n--- \nThis event is part of the Threads of Resilience Festival \nGiven the current situation and urgency to express\, we decided to co-organise a community-led and collectively curated 3-day festival “Threads of Resilience” from 14-16 December at Oyoun. Those include a press conference\, bazaar\, panels\, film screening\, talks\, exhibition\, workshops\, concerts\, healing session\, theater\, puppet show for children\, and parties. With this festival\, we want to reflect on and learn from movements of resistance\, resilience\, and solidarity across the world and come together for three days of ephemerality and collaborative archiving. We want to address and speak out against repression\, silencing\, instrumentalisation\, and division. We need to continue to empower\, promote\, and celebrate pluralistic perspectives from\, with\, and intersectionally marginalised communities.Admission is based on free donation (nobody will be denied entry if they cannot donate). All proceeds will be given to organizations in support of victims of racist police violence and to organizations giving legal support to people threatened with deportation. \nAccessibility: \nOyoun is constantly working to make access to all events offered in the building as barrier-free as possible. SUMMARY:Sea Behind the Wall | Outdoor Film Screening | LUPA/TERRE: The Fight for Land and Justice
DESCRIPTION:*Please note: In case of bad weather\, the screening will be taking place indoors at Oyoun.* \nCurated by Savannah Garcia \nLupa in tagalog\, above else\, means land. In the Philippines\, the word lupa also resonates with the complex issues of private property and the ongoing oppression faced by sugarcane workers. Hacienda\, an exploitative land system inherited from Spanish colonization\, still prevails today. In response\, filmmakers and artists are shedding light on the multifaceted aspects of post-colonialism\, exploring its impact on the landscape and the bodies of laborers toiling in the fields. \nThis screening by the curator Savannah Garcia offers diverse perspectives on this subject\, all with the shared goal of revealing the social\, political\, and environmental realities through the narratives of laborers\, farmers\, social workers\, and scholars. Following the screening\, Enzo Camacho\, the artist behind "羽化 (wings becoming)"\, and representative of ALPAS Pilipinas\, will join and engage in a discussion with scholars who possess invaluable knowledge of land and soil issues. \n10:00-21:00 How Many Seas Will You Swim? by Lizza May David & Gabriel Rossell-Santillán \n:: Video installation in loop at Oyoun’s Café \nInspired by chants and myths from Mexico and the Philippines this installation displays our dialogue on the ocean as a spatial dimension and relational point of view. The installation meticulously traces the narrative strands of a Bauhinia orchid tree\, symbolizing historical trade relations during the New Spain era. It deftly intertwines modern visuals with poetic eloquence and rigorous research\, unravelling multilayered concepts of time. \n19:30-19:50 Pagkatapos ng Tigkiriwi (After the Dead Season) by Danielle Madrid (23:05) \n:: Film screening in Oyoun’s Garden \nPagkatapos ng Tigkiriwi is a documentary that tells a story of three areas in Negros Occidental and their struggle for land and food security. \n19:50-20:00 羽化* (wings becoming) by Amy Lien & Enzo Camacho (06:20) \n:: Film screening in Oyoun’s Garden \n* [yǔhuà]\nA cosmological system is presented here through 16mm silent film\, five handmade paper drawings\, a light installation made of onion skins\, and “tangle works” (nests\, kindling\, intertwinings demonic in their thick opacity). The film loops on a ritual of fire ensues\, as a small barrel lined with joss paper is lit seemingly with the touch of flesh. One by one\, butterflies are fed to flame\, becoming fire-bodied\, then flaking into their presumed disappearance. \n20:00-21:20 Tu crois que la terre est chose morte (You Think the Earth is a Dead Thing) by Florence Lazar (70 minutes) \n:: Film screening in Oyoun’s Garden \nThe film looks at the “global ecological crisis” from the perspective of the island of Martinique. In reflecting on ecology\, the film not only raises issues concerning nature and damaged ecosystems\, but\, moreover\, focuses on spaces of resistance to the crisis in which women and men acknowledge and act from the historical perspective of colonialism\, where ecological struggle and the colonial past are intrinsically linked. Taken from Césaire's play Une tempête\, a postcolonial adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest\, the title not only evokes the ecological ravages of colonialism\, but also the emancipatory potential of history. \nDoors: 18:30 h\nVideo Installation: 10:00 h - 21:00 h at Oyoun’s Café\nScreenings: 19:30 h - 21:30 h at Oyoun’s Garden\nDiscussion: 21:30 h - 22:30 h at Oyoun’s Café \nTicket: Free admission | Registration here\nLanguage: English\n \nPhoto: Filmstill\, wings becoming \n  \nBiography \nSavannah Garcia \nSavannah Garcia is a French-Filipino researcher currently based in Berlin\, with a background in art and social sciences (EHESS\, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales). Specializing in art and realism\, and in documentary cinema in particular\, she has collaborated with the Cinéma du Réel (Centre Pompidou) and the Festival International Jean Rouch (Musée du Quai Branly) in Paris. She persues her research in Berlin\, on the relation between home (foyer) and nation in global history. She is also an active member of ALPAS Pilipinas and the co-creator of Banana Ketchup\, a zine dedicated in unpacking and deconstructing colonial narratives. \nSea Behind the Wall \n"Sea behind the Wall’ is a participatory outdoor chapter within Oyoun's overarching initiative Listening to the Land. In this immersive outdoor series\, participants are invited to engage on a collective journey that explores neo-colonialism’s complexities\, incorporating intergenerational\, indigenous and contemporary practices for solidarity. \nThey will be guided through a range of experiences\, including decolonizing agri/cultural workshops\, foraging and gardening sessions\, film screenings focusing on land and human rights\, public interventions led by indigenous communities\, and a street side window exhibition that winds its ways through the city of Berlin. \nThe project “Sea Behind the Wall” is part of the initiative DRAUSSENSTADT funded by Berliner Projektfonds Urbane Praxis as well as Senatsverwaltung für Kultur und Gesellschaflichen Zusammenhalt. SUMMARY:UN:IMAGINABLE – Filmscreening: Quo Vadis\, Aida?
DESCRIPTION:Screening\, followed by a Q&A with Melina Borčak \nAn unforgettable movie! - The New York Times \n\nABOUT "QUO VADIS\, AIDA?" - a film by Jasmila Žbanić \nBosnia\, 11 July 1995. Aida is a translator for the United Nations in the small town of Srebrenica. When the Serbian army takes over the town\, her family is among the thousands of citizens looking for shelter in the UN camp. As an insider to the negotiations\, Aida has access to crucial information that she needs to interpret. What is at the horizon for her family and people - rescue or death? Which move should she take? \nDoors: 19.00H\nStart: 19.30H (Club Space\, Souterrain)\nLanguage: OMU – Bosnian\, English and Dutch with German subtitles\nTickets: Donation-based \n–--- \nThis event is part of UN:IMAGINABLE - our histories in conversation \nUN:IMAGINABLE is one remarkable theatre production resulting from lived realities of trauma\, war\, segregation and exile. In the 1990s the conflicts in Rwanda and the Balkans shattered the world and remain recorded as two of the bloodiest events in modern history. However\, testimonies and stories continue to this day. Many have fled their home country and some have reached Germany\, a space glorified as paradise.  \nSociety is stuck in suppressed fear and hatred leading to further conflicts while in denial of histories untold. UN:IMAGINABLE mirrors the banality of evil and its connection to everyday\, mundane life and deals with the hour prior to death in the lives of victims and perpetrators.  \nWorld Premiere: 18 May\, at 18.00H (Reception) / 19.30 H (Performance) \nAdditional performances:  \n19 May\, 19.00H (Doors) / 19.30H (Performance)\n22 May\, 19.00H (Doors) / 19.30H (Performance) \nUN:IMAGINABLE is produced by Oyoun Berlin\, Mashirika Performing Arts and Media Company Rwanda and the Sarajevo War Theater Bosnia-Herzegovina. \nSupported in the fund TURN2 the Federal Cultural Foundation and the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media as well as by the Heinrich Böll Foundation. \n--- \nABOUT \nMelina Borčak (Q&A host) \nHaters say I’m a Muslim\, feminazi refugee islamizing the fake news-media at CNN\, ARD and Deutsche Welle… They’re right. \nDocumentaries\, street art\, museum exhibitions\, data journalism: I’ve already done lots of things in order to tell important stories. And I’ve got 10 years experience doing so. \nDuring the genocide against Bosniaks\, I grew up in Germany’s cosiest refugee camp (by “cozy” I mean it was a damn aluminum container)\, until I was forced to go “back” to a country I didn’t even know – Bosnia. In the ruins of Sarajevo\, I studied Journalism and filled my adrenalin addiction through adventurous trips to exotic destinations such as Bonn\, Potsdam and Berlin – at Deutsche Welle\, the Electronic Media School and the Parliament of Germany (know your enemy). Despite a successful career in Bosnian media\, I decided to return to Germany in 2015 – after almost 20 years in Bosnia. \nHere\, I continued working as a journalist\, became a columnist\, founded “Perspective Collective” – a collective of journalists that are refugees and/or POC. Now I’m building a media startup in Bosnia and working on two documentaries. \nJasmila Žbanić (director) \nBorn in Sarajevo in 1974\, Jasmila is a graduate of her native city’s Academy of Dramatic Arts\, Theatre and Film Directing Department. Before filmmaking\, she also worked as a puppeteer in the Vermont-based Bread and Puppet Theater and as a clown in a Lee Delong workshop. Her feature debut GRBAVICA won the 2006 Berlinale Golden Bear\, was sold to 40 territories and received nominations for European Film and Actress at the European Film Awards. \nON THE PATH\, Jasmila’s second feature film\, premiered at the 2010 Berlinale\, in the Competition section. The film had world-wide distribution in 25 territories\, won numerous awards\, and was nominated for European Actress at the European Film Awards. \nJasmila’s films and video works have been displayed at dozens of art exhibitions world-wide such as Manifesta 3\, the Istanbul Biennial\, Kunsthalle Fridericianum Kassel\, Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation\, New Museum in New York(...) She is the recipient of the 2014 KAIROS Prize which honours European artists whose work is judged to have a major cultural and social impact. SUMMARY:a'21: Dust to Come_New Media Society/ Parking Video Library
DESCRIPTION:►a'21: Dust to Come_New Media Society/ Parking Video Library \n:: ABOUT THIS EVENT (EN/AR) :: \nDust to come is a re-screening of a former online program at New Media Projects which will take place both online/offline in our space and via our website. Was it ever our future? “The Removed Agency” got me by surprise when I received the invitation to contribute to the Future Threads Program. A teenage sci-fi fan\, who never watched Star Trek or Star Wars\, I asked around from my artist\, cinephile and writer friends\, and in our conversations led to some interesting findings. On the surface\, we don’t talk/write/speculate about the future\, a few animated fantasies\, a few novels dealing with alternative history\, and some timeless dystopian theatre play. And soon I realised I need to educate myself about video games and comic books. Not only we don’t write/create our takes on the future but often being omitted from having future in many other scenarios: in some films\, middle-east is consumed/destroyed\, because of its natural resources and/or appear on some war room’s wall map or flickering dots on a screen during a pandemic outbreak. The future is blurry; we made countless Macro & Micro mistakes; we know the storm is inevitable; we watch science fiction\, or we don’t… The future was never bright as they promised it to be\, for some parts of the world is still as non-existent and discriminatory\, as if it wasn’t pictured at all and never predicted. See-through eyes\, laser guns\, and flying objects became killer drones\, 3D printing both an environmental threat and a cure for ventilator shortage. The colourful plastic future once was pictured dreamy and chic but no one told us about the dust to come. \n► Click "going" on Facebook to stay up to date.\n► Join the event through vimeo. \n:: LINKS :: \n►Arash Khosronejad \nInstagram\n►Arash Hanaei\nWebsite\nInstagram \n►Nassrin Nasser \nWebsite \nInstagram \n►Maryam Katan \nWebsite\nInstagram \n►Shaahin Peymani \nWebsite\nInstagram  \n►Elnaz Salehi \nInstagram \n►Milad Forouzandeh \nWebsite \n►Mohsen Hazrati \nWebsite\nInstagram  \n►Nazanin Aharipour \nInstagram  \n►Ramin Rahimi \nWebsite  \n* This event is part of Oyoun's a’21 Festival - Post Digital Ignorance x Techno Utopia aiming to challenge the status quo while centring perspectives on non-human life\, queer ecology\, decolonising knowledge\, forced displacement\, and more. The project was financed by Berlin’s Hauptstadtkulturfonds. \nProduced by: Oyoun in collaboration with amberPlatform \nCuratorial Team: Amirali Ghasemi\, Ali Cem Doğan\, Cenkhan Aksoy\, Christoph Wachter\, Ebru Yetişkin\, Ekmel Ertan\, Hamza Chamas\, Mathias Jud\, Milad Forouzandeh\, Mohsen Hazrat\, Nina Martin\, Rajaa Shamam\, Youssef El Idrissi Participants include: Eda Sütunç\, Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley\, Mary Maggic\, Rachel Uwa\, Renata Salecl\, Seloua Luste Boulbina\, Pelin Tan\, Yara Mekawei\, and many more. \nFunded by: Capital Cultural Fund \n► For media and press inquiries\, please email hallo@oyoun.de
