SUMMARY:Soura Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The third edition of Soura Film Festival\, hosted at Oyoun\, will take place from October 21st - 24th 2021 in Berlin. \nThe festival will present a programme curated with the idea to address queer culture\, filmmakers\, and characters relevant to South West Asia and North Africa; a region commonly known as S.W.A.N.A. \nIn the majority of these territories\, homosexuality remains illegal with the consequence of severe punishment. Degrees of tolerance vary from one state to the other\, but LGBTQI+ communities often face regular harassment and crackdowns from state authorities\, with religion and morality often evoked to arouse public sentiment. Therefore\, the festival’s mission is to create a safe and welcoming space for queer filmmakers who are often shunned or persecuted in their home countries\, their stories too often suppressed or censored. \n  \nThursday\, October 21  \nVernissage of the exhibition BACKBONE - more info here \n// Event start: 16:00  \nOpening Film [Feature 1] – THE MANY LIVES OF KOJIN (88 min) + Q&A \n// Doors open: 18:30 // Event start: 19:00 \nFilm Program 1 - Far From Home (70 min) \n// Doors open: 21:45 // Event start: 22:00 \n  \nFriday\, October 22  \nShort Film Program 2 - A Bittersweet Escape (83 min) \n// Doors open: 16:45 // Event start: 17:00 \nFeature 2 - NICO (75 min) + Q&A   \n// Doors open: 18:45 // Event start: 19:00 \nFeature 3 – Sex\, Revolution and Islam (81 min) + Q&A \n// Doors open: 21:15 // Event start: 21:30 \n  \nSaturday\, October 23 \nPanel discussion: Reclaiming Narration: On Queering Middle Eastern Cinema \n// Doors open: 14:45 // Event start: 15:00 \nRetrospective - Anyab (100 min) \n// Doors open: 16:45 // Event start: 17:00 \nShort Film Program 3 - Hearts In Purgatory (70 min) \n// Doors open: 19:15 // Event start: 19:30 \nFeature 4 - Death of a Virgin and the Sin of Not Living  (90 min) + Q&A \n// Doors open: 21:15 // Event start: 21:30 \n  \nSunday\, October 24 \nPanel discussion: How Queer is ‘Queer Cinema’ from the Middle East? \n// Doors open: 12:45 // Event start: 13:00 \nBeyond Border - Focus on Pakistan (90 min) \n// Doors open: 14:45 // Event start: 15:00 \nXPOSED: Cruising Courageously (90 min) + Q&A \n// Doors open: 16:45 // Event start: 17:00 \nFeature 5 – Love\, Spells and all That (96 min) \n// Doors open: 18:45 // Event start: 19:00 \nClosing Film [Feature 6] MIGUEL’S WAR (128  min) + Q&A \n// Doors open: 21:00 // Event start: 21:30 \n  \n→ see the full programme here \n→ Get your Ticket here  \n  \n*** \nABOUT THE PROGRAMME: \nThe programme of our third edition will include 7 feature films\, 30 short films (compiled into 5 different programs)\, 2 panel discussions\, and an exhibition by 'Mazen Khaddaj'. \nThe festival opens with Diako Yazdani's The Many Lives of Kojin\, a very touching film about a 23 year-old young man who seeks to exist in a society where he seems unable to find his place. The film is having its German premiere at Soura and the event will feature the presence of the filmmaker and protagonist. \nSome of the other highlights include Seyran Ateş: Sex\, Revolution and Islam by Nefise Özkal Lorentzen\, which aims to provoke the debate suggesting the necessity of a sexual revolution in the Islamic world; the Lebanese film Death of a Virgin\, and the Sin of Not Living by George Peter Barbari\, one of the highlights of this year's Berlinale Panorama; Eline Gehring's Nico about a woman dealing with a terrible xenophobic incident and taking her destiny into her own hands; among many others. \nWith our Retrospective section\, the festival endeavours to rediscover film history and provide a contextualized experience with the ongoing transformation of cinematic storytelling and its aesthetics. For this edition we are screening Anyab by Mohammed Shebl\, an Egyptian take on the classic 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show'. \nOur 2021 edition will close with the astonishing Teddy Winner Miguel’s War by Eliane Raheban\, about a man confronting the ghosts of the past and exploring unrequited love and tormenting feelings of guilt. The filmmaker took 9 years to make the film and will be present at our closing ceremony. \nThis edition also marks the launching of a new section\, called Beyond Borders\, set to highlight filmmakers from territories outside of the SWANA region. To kick off this inaugural segment\, we invited the filmmaker Hamza Bangash to curate the program for us with the focus on Pakistani filmmakers. The program will be composed of 7 beautiful short films. \n*** \nThis project was organised in cooperation with Heinrich Böll Stiftung and The Power of the Arts and has been realized by the support of The Student Hotel\, Siegessäule\, Clam Order\, Indiekino Berlin\, PinguinDruck\, Habibi Collective\, iHeartBerlin\, XPOSED Queer Film Festival\, International Queer & Migrant Film Festival Amsterdam\, Supernova Cinema and Lab111. \n  \nIG: @sourafilmfest  \nFacebook: @SouraFilmFest \nTwitter: @SouraFilmFest \nWebsite: https://sourafilmfest.com/ \n  \nArtwork: Dariush Alexander \nDesign: Clam Order  (to the Website > here)

SUMMARY:KAUM Indonesian Alternative Performance & Film Festival 2021
DESCRIPTION:The KAUM Indonesian Alternative Performance & Film Festival organised by the Soydivision collective aims to raise underrepresented voices in the Indonesian society on issues related to the environment\, the Chinese-Indonesian society\, East Indonesia\, Feminism\, and LGBTQ+. These different topics translate into the categories of the festival: dare to be conscious\, dare to be different\, dare to be east\, dare to be equal\, dare to be oneself! \nThe festival takes place over 14 days at three different venues: Oyoun - Lucy-Lameck-Str. 32\, 12049 Berlin\, District Berlin - Bessemerstraße 2\, 12103 Berlin\, and Ana Conda am Ufer - Uferstr. 23 c/o Uferstudios\, 13357 Berlin. The program ranges from the screening of Indonesian films to performances by Indonesian diaspora artists and public discourses. \nFor programme details and tickets see: kaumfestival.soydivision.berlin \n  \n--- \nThe word KAUM in the Indonesian language means a “clan” or a “community”\, while in German\, it means “barely” or even “marginally”.  \nWith its more than 13 thousand islands throughout the archipelago\, Indonesia is blessed with diverse clans/communities\, each with its own distinctive culture. However\, as a nation that claims “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” (Unity in Diversity) as its official national motto\, Indonesia still faces segregation within its diverse society: there exist the marginalized and the minority. Some of the marginalized choose to flee the country in the hope of finding a better future elsewhere. However\, geographically escaping the space does not mean solving the issues\, as it has veritably ingrained and became a part of one’s identity. \nSoydivision is a Berlin-based independent alternative Indonesian diaspora collective with a mission to provoke a discussion about the exploration and the expression of identity through art and food. Reflecting on the issue of marginalized communities\, Soydivision was inspired to expand its calling to create a platform and space for the underrepresented in a hybrid form of a performance and film festival: KAUM - Indonesian Alternative Performance & Film Festival. \nPerformance is the breath of Soydivision as a collective. It is often used as a medium to express the community’s concerns and to channel our responses to issues mainly related to social and climate injustice. Established and founded in 2017\, Soydivision has been growing ever since\, allowing the community’s family to expand\, as it gets to meet and collaborate with other Indonesian and Asian diasporas\, who share similar interests and backgrounds: from students\, fellow artists\, performers\, musicians to filmmakers. We believe that we can find more innovative yet sustainable methods from these diverse universes and connections to impact and attract new audiences. \nLike two sides of a coin\, we see performance and film as two fundamentally interconnected parts\, as they essentially carry the same notion and share similar purposes - to convey emotions. With film\, the emotions are often channeled through live-action storytelling that is documented through a lens based on the actual space. On the other side\, the act of performance originated and is processed internally before it is tangibly and presently expressed\, regardless of where the scene occurs. \nBased on this view\, this alternative festival aims to cultivate and preserve diverse\, underrepresented  Indonesian voices to advance in Europe. The festival showcases several main categories covering some of the underlying issues of Indonesian marginal communities while combining performances and films as the two subjects of the festival’s main foundations. The festival aspires to act as a representative for Indonesia’s marginal communities. \nWith cutting-edge screening programs for each of the festival’s categories\, the festival also aims to provide a platform for Indonesian filmmakers to showcase their films in Europe. Moreover\, each category will be accompanied by performances from Indonesian artists who reside in Europe as a critical and honest response towards each of the related issues. In doing so\, KAUM hopes to represent those whose voices are constantly oppressed and deserve to be heard and create a space for constructive dialogues through the two perspectives. \n--- \nFunded by: #TakePart funding program by Fonds Darstellende Künste  \nPartners: Queer Asia\, European Solidarity Corps\, In-Docs\, Minikino\, Jakarta Feminist
