SUMMARY:Screening: “The Sound of Masks“: A tribute to Atanásio Nyusi
DESCRIPTION:A tribute screening of “The Sound of Masks“ (2018)\, directed by award winning filmmaker Sara Gouveia. \n\nThe documentary film follows the history of Mozambique through the eyes (and life) of the late and legendary Mapiko dancer\, choreographer and storyteller Atanásio Nyusi\, who passed away in November 2022. “The Sound of Masks“ celebrated its world premiere at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) in 2018. The publication “Africa is a Country“ described it as “a visual meditation on the nature of memory in postcolonial societies”. \n\nThis event will be supported by a screening of “Transient”\, a short film by artist PURE\, as well as a performance intervention titled ‘’threading the energies’’ by musicians Kechou and Arawak Tausi. \nFree Entry! No registration required.  \nDoors: 19:00 h  \nStart: 19:30 h  \n––– \nSara Gouveia is an award winning filmmaker based in Cape Town\, South Africa. Her films have strong visual aesthetics and explore the line between fiction and reality. Sara was an alumna of the Durban Film Mart\, IDFA Summer School\, Hot Docs Blue-Ice Lab\, DocLisboa’s Nebulae and Berlinale Talents. \nPURE is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Berlin. Her practice engages and activates the sensory codes developed in the space of what is inarticulable within the limited parameters of western thought about blackness. Her work languages the unlanguagable\, exploring notions of alienation\, transitions and transcendence\, redefining epistemologies of resistance from a deeply intimate place. \nArawak Tausi (Emmanuel Girondin) is a performer\, musician and artist based in Berlin. His practice combines many genres including jazz\, afrobeat and an electronic sound experimentation. \nKechou (Kerim Becker) is a musician based in Berlin\, working in the realm of electro-acoustic blends of sounds and timelines. \nThis event is co-organozed by Duduetsang Lamola aka blk banaana.

He is the Artistic Director of the New York Arabic Orchestra and often collaborates with institutions and agencies like Carnegie Hall and the UNESCO\, to further advance the cultural representation and inclusivity of Arabic music worldwide. \n_Ismail Lumanovski: Clarinet (Soloist)  \nThe extraordinary clarinetist Ismail Lumanovski is a musical force of passion and dynamic virtuosity. Already of\ninternational distinction\, Lumanovki has launched a major career as a soloist\, chamber musician in both classical\nand cross-over repertoire. His synergistic blend of natural talent and training combines the spirit of folk music\nwith the discipline of classical music. \nHis performances have been widely reviewed. DESCRIPTION:German version below/ Deutsche Version unten  \nThe International Women’s Day is not only meant to set a sign against the daily and worldwide oppression of girls and women\, inter\, trans and non-binary persons in patriarchal systems. It also celebrates the courageous fights against social injustices\, discrimination\, sexist and racist violence. The book “Breaking Borders to Build Bridges: 20 Years of Women in Exile” also tells of the stories and struggles of strong women. The book\, written collectively by Women in Exile\, is a collection of texts about fleeing\, surviving\, about the situation in refugee camps and 20 years of activism as a group of refugee women for the abolishment of camps (Lager) and for freedom of movement. \nAt this Book reading\, activists of Women in Exile will first read excerpts from the book “Breaking Borders to Build Bridges” and will then be answering audience questions during a Q&A. \n“With this book\, we make space for voices that are often silenced.” (Women in Exile) \nThe Event will be in English. More information below.  \n–––\nIm Vorfeld des Internationalen feministischen Kampftages: Lesung mit Women in Exile: „Breaking Borders to Build Bridges“.  \nDer Internationale feministische Kampftag soll nicht nur ein Zeichen setzen gegen die tagtägliche und weltweite Unterdrückung von Mädchen und Frauen\, inter\, trans und nicht-binären Personen in patriarchalen Systemen. Er lehrte und forschte unter anderem an der Universität Teheran. Als Musikdirektor war er an zwei Musikschulen in Teheran tätig. Für mehr als 60 professionelle Theaterstücke komponierte Bayat die Musik. Er spielte Hunderte von Konzerten mit verschiedenen Bands (darunter Shahnazi und Chehal Daf) im Iran und in anderen Ländern wie Polen\, Armenien\, Italien\, Katar\, der Türkei und Deutschland. Mit seiner Band "Zarb AWA" trat er vor allem im Iran und in Indonesien auf. Yaser Bayat veröffentlichte mehrere wissenschaftliche Artikel wie „Kamanche Lorestan\, Turkman\, Theatermusik“ und zwei Bücher „Darband"\, Tonbak und Chasme Khoroshan Rhythm. Viele Male war er im Fernsehen und im Radio präsent. Er spielte Musik im Film "Hamgonah" und im Album "Mast Hoshiar". Als aktives Mitglied wirkt er als Komponist im "Theater Haus" und "Musik Haus" im Iran mit. Yaser Bayat ist seit 2021 in Berlin wohnhaft und unterrichtet Musik an der Global Musik School. This month's event will be hosted by our guest artist facilitator\, Shabnam Sarmadi. SUMMARY:Itinerant Geographies – A Proposition for Radical Unbelonging
DESCRIPTION:I have invited a group of friends and colleagues to "unbelong together"\, which resulted in the exchange of practices that make up this program. Following an intuition that gardens\, as places of the "could have been" and the "could be"\, that is\, of failure and hope\, could be the lenses\, the place\, the set of practices\, the impetus\, and/or the systems through and by which to approach issues of belonging/unbelonging\, away from state coercion and other identity politics and determinisms\, I invited them to respond to this intuition with their own practices. \nI hope this exchange will create resonances and conjunctions for new territories\, though it might as well (miss)lead us to dead ends and false connections. She studied Applied Theatre at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2003)\, Dance at Rallou Manou\, Athens (2011)\, and Choreography and Performance at JLU in Germany (2019). In her work she focuses on the relationships among identity\, current events\, and poetics\, experimenting with how geographies can be expressed by the utopic medium of performance. Her works Willow trees exist\, Cotton flowers exist\, Apricot Trees exist or an Impossible walk\, Don’t kill the messenger\, Zones of Immaterial Pictorial Sensibility\, Nekri Fysi\, Icono-Stasis have been presented in Giessen\, Frankfurt\, Kassel\, Darmstadt\, Mannheim\, Berlin and Athens. She lives and works in Giessen. \nNitish Jain (b.1989) is an immersive storyteller working across the mediums of architecture\, performance art\, and installations. He is the founder of Studio MoreThanThat\, an artistic [agency/practice] that makes multi-sensory experiences. They invite audiences to sense rather than see their works by incorporating touch\, taste\, smell\, listening\, and seeing in different ways. Nitish trained as an architect and as a scenographer. He was born in India and he currently lives and works in Prague\, Czechia.  \nDiana De Fex is a performer\, choreographer\, and art pedagogue using artistic methods (narrative storytelling\, autoethnography\, somatics) to explore human- environment relations and politics beyond identity and representation. They is interested in researching non-binary and non-linear logics and perceptions\, freedom of speech and of dissent as well as restorative justice. She/they is currently completing an MA in Choreography and Performance at the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies-Giessen. \nOlga Popova is a Ukrainian artist educated in film\, theater\, and acting and based in Germany. Her interest lies in the plasticity of the environment and its translation and transformation into the stage or other non-theatrical spaces. She is currently enrolled\nin the MA  Applied Theater Studies program in Giessen with a specialization in Performing Arts Practice. \nChristian Maturana describe themselves as a drop of water in the ocean. \nFabián Franco Márquez is a visual artist working in scenography and painting (murals\, billboarding\, and street art) as well as art pedagogy. He graduated from the University of Cluj-Napoca and currently lives and works in Leipzig. \nVincent Viala works as a musician and music educator in various formats\, and in theatrical-performative contexts backstage. In addition to solo and band projects ranging from garage-punk to singer-songwriter\, to experimental improvisation\, Viala works on compositional experiments and fragments\, which go in various directions of acoustic/time-based art. "Misappropriation" of conventional instruments\, or electronic and sample-based are preferred techniques here\, which also come to bear especially in the musical accompaniment of performing art. Thereby he moves in the absurd\, in experiment and noise\, in improvisation\, in melancholy and dissonance\, as well as in the fragile\, in the little\, in repetition\, in the atmospheric. Spontaneity\, expressivity\, freedom of means and material\, and the unique capacity of sound to create emotional meaning are important themes in his work. His research investigates tools to build an antiracist and powerful representation of trans bipoc people’s sociality\, identity\, and their historical journey. \nAstan Meyer is a singer\, actress\, curator and model born in France and traveling regularly to Mali since the age of 3. She combines different musical genres\, from jazz to rock to afro-techno to hip-hop and is also the lead singer of the band Asphalt Djelis\, which mixes ancient and futuristic sounds. She expresses herself also through all the dance influences she has encountered. She has appeared as an actress in music videos and commercials\, mainly in Germany and France. She has been involved in many creative collaborations such as with Puma\, Sevdaliza\, the Hoodoo Musical in Berlin. She is also a co-founder of Culture Supply and a member of Out Out Time Embassy\, a multicultural group of curators who generate conversation and curiosity about art and culture in Berlin. \nAmowia is a German-Ghanaian multidisciplinary artist who started dancing at age five. They learned hip-hop and contemporary dance\, teaching their own dance class by age fifteen. After moving to Berlin in 2014\, Amowia worked as a choreographer\, movement coach\, model\, and dancer\, appearing on TV shows and working with national and international artists. They honed their dance skills in London before joining the ballroom scene in 2018\, which allowed them to embrace their roots\, identity\, and queerness. As a DJ\, Amowia plays house music heavily influenced by afro beats\, hip hop\, RnB\, and ballroom beats. Their passion for house music has led them to give people a certain groove on the dance floor and take them on a journey. \nREGIE \nMirah Laline is a brazilian director\, actress\, dramaturg and theater pedagoge. She studied Directing in the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul\, and was in the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in 2015 as a DAAD scholarship holder. Productions such as „Der Hässliche“ of Marius von Mayenburg\, Sasha Marianna Salzmanns „Muttersprache Mameloschn“ and „Pátria Estrangeira / Fremde Heimat“ (Koproduktion Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and Goethe-Institut Porto Alegre) won several awards in Brazil. In 2021 she developed the transcultural project „Juntos/ Bî Hevra“\, which took place at the "Galerie im Körnerpark"\, followed by „Das Humboldt Experiment”\, in Humboldt Forum\, with its first exhibition in March of 2022. Her work offers the opportunity of learning and exchanging about topics such as decolonialism and diversity in the cultural scene\, for institutions as well as for artists. \nCHOREOGRAPHIE \nBlack Pearl de Almeida Lima is a multidisciplinary Afro- Latinx trans brazilian artist living in Berlin\, Germany. She graduated from the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim\, has performed professionally in various theater institutions and renowned professional dance companies in Germany. Is currently a member of the Iconic House Saint Laurent Europe. SUMMARY:Dance\, live music + conversation | Solidarity Fundraiser for Flood Affectees in Pakistan
DESCRIPTION:This year's Earth Day\, join the group Critical Pakistan for a solidarity fundraiser for flood affectees in Pakistan. While Pakistan is responsible for a statistically small share of global carbon emissions\, Global Climate Risk Index 2021 ranked Pakistan the 8th most vulnerable country to climate change. Climate change has caused frequent floods\, unpredictable rainfall\, soil damage and food insecurity. Last year\, Pakistan faced unprecedented floods leaving behind a massive trail of death and destruction. The floods caused damages of 40 billion dollars  to the infrastructure. It killed more than 1700 people\, almost one-third of whom were children. More than 793\,900 livestock died and around two million acres of crops and orchards were impacted. Unfortunately\, floods are no longer part of the news cycle and media attention has dwindled. Nevertheless\, the crisis remains: millions are still struggling to meet existential needs. \nThe first part of the evening will be a conversation on climate justice and action with activists from both Pakistan and Germany discussing questions on responsibility\, resistance and their work. In the second half\, dancer and performer Amna Mawaz Khan\, multidisciplinary artist Kazim Hussain and filmmaker/musician Dara Shikoh will present “Ralli/رلی“\, an exploration of dance\, music and theatre they will develop for this event. \nWHERE THE FUNDS GO TO \nPakistan has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. The situation has been exacerbated due to the floods. An immersion and exploration of dance\, music and theatre. \nPARTICIPANTS \nSpeakers \nMinerwa Tahir is an activist from Pakistan who lives in Berlin. She is a member of Gruppe Arbeiterinnenmacht and the Workers and Youth Relief Campaign. The campaign is a coalition of trade unions and leftist organisations in Pakistan that advocates for climate justice in the region. One of their key demands is debt cancellation for the semi-colonial world. \nTatu Hey is German-Kenyan. She has been a part of the Black Earth Kollektiv since 2020. By drawing links between climate injustice\, racism and colonialism\, the collective advocates for an intersectional climate justice movement. \nPriyanka Hafeez Dero is a member of the Women Democratic Front (WDF)\, a socialist-feminist movement in Pakistan. She is the General Secretary of WDF in Karachi. During recent floods\, WDF worked across the country along with its comrades and sympathizers to raise funds and provide basic facilities and medical help to the flood affectees. WDF also visited relief camps regularly and stayed in touch with the affectees. \nSulti is a Kurdish non-binary activist (pronouns they/them or their name) in the areas of migration and climate justice. They migrated to Germany seven years ago and have since been part of the Climate Movement in Hambacher Forest\, Lützi and other forest occupations. Sulti is also involved in the Abolish Frontex Campaign\, a campaign against the EU border regime. They raise awareness about racism\, transphobia\, police brutality and connect BIPoC migrant groups in the struggle for freedom\, liberation and a borderless world. \nModerator: \nFazila Bhimji\, Ph.D. She is an independent scholar and activist residing in Berlin. Her research interest and activism has focused on migration in the global North. Currently\, using an intersectional and decolonial approach\, she is exploring the links between economic flows and the displacement of people because of climate injustice and crisis in Pakistan.  \nPerformers: \nAmna Mawaz Khan is a practitioner of dance and politics. She is currently between Heidelberg and Rawalpindi\, pursuing a degree in Transcultural Studies. She is a member of the Awami Workers Party\, Women Democratic Front and Laal Hartaal. Her training in dance began at a young age under Bharathanatyam exponent Indu Mitha\, and her lifelong relationship to movement translated into different projects ranging from theatre\, film and music. Amna has taught\, learnt and performed in Pakistan\, India\, China\,  Switzerland\, Deutschland\, England and the USA. \nKazim Hussain is a multidisciplinary artist\, based in Berlin. His research revolves around decolonisation\, societal structures and Pakistan's blasphemy laws. With a background in theatre and academia\, he works to create awareness about Pakistani culture and debunk myths associated with it. \nDara Shikoh Channa is a Berlin-based Pakistani filmmaker and musician. DESCRIPTION:Aufgrund der nach wie vor tragischen Situation organisiert Soli Küfa am 5. Mai eine Solidaritätsveranstaltung für die Erdbebenopfer in Kurdistan\, der Türkei und Syrien. Şeyda Kurt wird aus ihrem aktuellen Buch “HASS” lesen\, Elu wird eine Ausstellung präsentieren und Adnan Çelik wird für uns kurdische und türkische Songs spielen. \nSoli Küfa ist als Solidaritäts-Küche gestartet\, die gegen Spenden Essen kocht und verkauft. Dies möchte sie auch weiterhin tun und Gäste mit kurdischen Speisen und Getränken versorgen. Auch wenn es bereits verschiedene Organisationen gibt\, die Spenden sammeln\, erhalten gerade Minderheiten wie z.B. Alevit*innen\, Ezid*innen oder Kurd*innen weiterhin nicht genügend Unterstützung von der Regierung. Mit eurer Hilfe und ihren Kontakten will die Soli Küfa Familien direkt unterstützen. Bereits im März konnten sie so Familien in den vom Erdbeben betroffenen Regionen helfen. DESCRIPTION:To those Exiled from Earth\, so they chose the sky إلى من كانت منفاھم الأرض، فاختاروا السماء  \n(’أجسَادٌ مِن عَلَق) Our Queer future is a past tense’ is an installation performance in a form of a promenade\, based on a post migration perspective on Queerness in relation to Arab* Identity(s). As a term\, Queerness does not exist in Arabic. However\, it does and did exist as a practice\, one that goes back further than the global queerness; that Western hegemony imposed on the globe. The language of queerness becomes hegemonic through erasing identities that existed before it and subsuming/substituting vast and complex communities\, histories\, and languages across the globe with a monolithic\, generalizing Western model of understanding and approaching sexual and gender diversity. Ahmad Baba will take the audience through a journey between different temporal and spatial dimensions of "queer" existence. : an invisible past\, incorporating linguistic\, social\, cultural\, and religious elements on erotic\, sexual and "non-normative" discourses from classical Arab* manuscripts. Into a distorted present that challenge the hegemony of Western narratives about Arabo-Islamic sexual and gender identities\, Towards imagining a utopic future that holds more questions than offer answers. “Ilk علق” is an attempt to engage with these questions! Baba’s work is firmly grounded in his interest in non-western manuscripts\, which serves as a foundation for inquiries into power structures\, taxonomies of identities\, and relational methodologies. His performances are exquisitely personalized\, reflecting his unique experiences and worldview\, and seek to disrupt conventional pedagogies around performance and body work that perpetuate hegemonic ideologies. DESCRIPTION:With Lavanya Subramaniam and Neela Bhaskar \nVarnam Salon Deutschland (VSD) is a series of performances by Germany-based senior art practitioners\, mid-career artists\, and upcoming dancers. Varnam is often the “main” piece in a solo Bharatanatyam performance. Our aim is to create an opportunity for young artists to explore his or her connection to the timeless art. \nWhy Varnam or Swarajathi? \nVarnam or Swarajathi is a long endurance piece that requires the depth of understanding of the chosen narrative and of the dancing body. The next edition will be on 26 June.* \nThe Art-Expression Life-Drawing Club led by Golnar Tabibzadeh is back in Berlin! \nEvery month Art-Expression Studios will host at least one Life-Drawing session in the last week of every month at Oyoun. Come and join us for three hours of Life-Drawing with live models posing. \nThe event will take place at the club room in Oyoun. \nEntry fee is donation based starting from 15€ per session. \nIf you wish to learn or improve your drawing skills\, visual knowledge of the human anatomy and the fundamentals of drawing techniques\, you can book additional training with an extra 15€ per session (30€ in total). \nParticipants should bring their own drawing materials. \nAdvance registration via the Art-Expression website is required. \nYou will then receive an invoice for registration. Die interaktive Ausstellung lädt zum Mitmachen ein - kommt vorbei\, spielt mit Ton und lasst eure Objekte Teil der Ausstellung werden. \nKeramiklub wurde 2021 durch Nhu Huynh und Ina Ko ins Leben gerufen. Ein Keramikerinnen Duo\, das gerne Wissen weitergibt und alle einlädt\, die Interesse haben mit Ton zu arbeiten. Through their experience as writers and podcasters\, their journalistic and cultural work\, and their interests in overlooked minorities and marginalized regions\, they create the TELEPHASSA UNIVERSE\, a project that combines fantasy with cultural activism and events. \nAbout SOUP3 \nThis event is part of the SOUP3 project\, which aims to revive the power of collaborative knowledge systems and connect them with creative and feminist approaches to entrepreneurship. \nIt focuses on working with displaced and marginalised communities whose voices are often not heard. A new understanding of creativity is created through the use of creative coping mechanisms.\nParticipants are invited into an interdisciplinary\, transnational ecosystem of exchange that empowers their voices and their power by providing them with seed money\, training and connections to develop and test creative\, artistic and socio-cultural solutions.
