She not only struggles to keep her family afloat\, but also against a hostile community that longs for her failure. \nABOUT Blerta Basholli (director)\nBlerta Basholli is a writer and director; her previous work is characterized by a realistic visual style. Basholli's stories touch on social and gender issues from Kosovo\, where she was born and raised. She lived and studied in New York\, where she worked on her first film projects. In 2008 she was honoured with the Deans Fellowship of the Film Graduate Program at the Tisch New York University School of the Arts. In 2011 she returned to her birthplace\, where she contributed as an author and director on numerous short and feature films. HIVE is her feature film debut\, its development she has worked on since 2011. \nThe event is funded by the European Academy Berlin (EAB) and the Alfred Toepfer Foundation. \nRegistration for the 18.02.2023 \n––– \nABOUT Did We Really Wake Up? \nDiscussions about European wars are a sensitive and highly relevant issue. Showing three selected films about the wars in the Western Balkans is intended to inform on the one hand\, but on the other hand also to draw parallels with the news we receive from Ukraine on a daily basis\, in order to raise awareness of emotional\, material and institutional ramifications that these wars result in. \nYoung people in particular often lack information which\, among other things\, leads to the fact that some perceive the Russian war against Ukraine as the "first war in Europe since the end of the Second World War". We want to point out this blind spot and dare to try to clear it up. By showing the following films Grbavica- Land of My Dreams\, Quo Vadis Aida? and Hive\, the topics of genocide\, sexual violence\, coming to terms with the past\, or the reconstruction after a war\, will be addressed. \nWith the three film screenings and subsequent moderated audience discussions\, the project promotes the exchange between experts from various domains (NGO representatives\, filmmakers and film theorists\, academics with a research focus on war crimes\, sexual violence and reconciliation) from the affected areas and young people. DESCRIPTION:This 16th of February is the second anniversary of Emilia Bau´s murder. \nThis evening is dedicated to honour the memory of Emilia Bau and the inspiring legacy she left to us with her life choices\, convictions and strength by screening a 20 minutes documentary that gives a glance on who she was\, the force of her spirit and the circumstances of her death. After the documentary there will be space for discussion and questions. This is the first time this documentary is being shown to the public.  \nEmilia Bau was -among other things- a trans woman\, ecotransfeminist\, animal rights activist\, defender of indigenous territories\, anti-capitalist. She was murdered by hitmen hired by businessmen on February 16th\, 2021\, in a Mapuche land reclamation in southern Chile. She was murdered for defending her people\, the forest\, the waters\, for standing firm against the exploitation of all beings. DESCRIPTION:Screening\, followed by panel discussion on the topic of genocide  \nLanguage: OMU Bosnian\, English\, Dutch with English Subtitles \nABOUT the movie Quo Vadis Aida? \nQUO VADIS\, AIDA? tells of just a few dramatic days in the life of a woman whose fate stands for that of an entire generation of women who survived the war in Bosnia. More than 8000 civilians - almost all of them male - were murdered and buried in mass graves by the Bosnian Serb army in the Srebrenica massacre\, which is classified as genocide. It is considered the most serious war crime in Europe since the end of World War II. In addition to the atrocious acts of Ratko Mladić's army\, the role of the United Nations has also been sharply criticized in connection with the massacre. July 2020 marked the 25th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre\, and to this day it seems incomprehensible that such a catastrophe could occur before the eyes of the international community\, in the middle of Europe. \nABOUT Elida Vikić \nElida Vikić is an associate for the Europe and Central Asia division of Human Rights Watch. She is involved in work around human rights issues in the EU\, Turkey\, and the Western Balkans. Prior to joining Human Rights Watch\, Elida worked on investigating women’s rights violations and post-war reconciliation efforts in the Balkans with the Center for Narrative and Conflict Resolution. Previously she worked in the US Congress. Elida holds a bachelor's degree in conflict resolution from George Mason University\, and a master's degree in Global Governance and Diplomacy from the University of Oxford. She believes not telling the truth about Sara's father is a way to protect both her and her daughter. \nABOUT Nena Močnik\nResearcher\, educator and community practitioner in peace education\, violence prevention and sociotherapy. Author of ‘War-related Sexual Violence and Trauma Transmission: Reconciliation and Peacebuilding in Post-Conflict Settings’ (Routledge 2020) and ‘Sexuality after War Rape: From Narrative to Embodied Research’ (Routledge 2017). In 2014\, she was a Fulbright visiting researcher at University of Southern California\, USA\, in 2015 Brown International Advanced Research Institute Fellow (Brown University\, Rhode Island\, US) and in 2016\, the International Centre on Non-Violent Conflict\, (Tufts University\, Massachusetts\, US) Fellow. Konzervirano). \n\nABOUT Dr. Kateryna Busol \nDr Kateryna Busol is a Ukrainian lawyer specialising in international human rights\, humanitarian\, criminal law\, transitional justice\, gender and cultural heritage protection. She holds an LLB\, LLM and PhD from the Institute of International Relations of Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University and an LLM from the University of Cambridge. After a brief period of corporate work for KPMG and Clifford Chance and with the outbreak of armed conflicts in Ukraine\, Kateryna resumed her practice in public international law. She consulted the Ukrainian side on the Scythian Gold case. In 2015-2019 Kateryna worked for Global Rights Compliance (GRC). Showing three selected films about the wars in the Western Balkans is intended to inform on the one hand\, but on the other hand also to draw parallels with the news we receive from Ukraine on a daily basis\, in order to raise awareness of emotional\, material and institutional ramifications that these wars result in. \nYoung people in particular often lack information which\, among other things\, leads to the fact that some perceive the Russian war against Ukraine as the "first war in Europe since the end of the Second World War". We want to point out this blind spot and dare to try to clear it up. By showing the following films Grbavica- Land of My Dreams\, Quo Vadis Aida? and Hive\, the topics of genocide\, sexual violence\, coming to terms with the past\, or the reconstruction after a war\, will be addressed. \nWith the three film screenings and subsequent moderated audience discussions\, the project promotes the exchange between experts from various domains (NGO representatives\, filmmakers and film theorists\, academics with a research focus on war crimes\, sexual violence and reconciliation) from the affected areas and young people. DESCRIPTION:The Art-Expression Life-Drawing Club is back in Berlin! \nEvery month Art-Expression Studios will host at least one Life-Drawing session in the last week of every month at Oyoun. Come and join us for three hours of Life-Drawing with live models posing. \nThe event will take place at the club room in Oyoun. \nEntry fee is donation based starting from 15€ per session. \nIf you wish to learn or improve your drawing skills\, visual knowledge of the human anatomy and the fundamentals of drawing techniques\, you can book additional training with an extra 15€ per session (30€ in total). \nParticipants should bring their own drawing materials. \nAdvance registration via the Art-Expression website is required. \nYou will then receive an invoice for registration. SUMMARY:Workshop by Kwasukasukela Arts Collective | Ngoma Consciousness
DESCRIPTION:The etymology of the Root word ‘Ngoma’ is found amongst many nations’ tribes and\nregions in southern\, central and West Africa. Janzen argued that Ngoma is a proto-\nBantu cognate within which exists an ecology of related institutions such as the\npractice of medicine\, divination\, crafts\, music\, and ritual. Kwasukasukela Arts Collective practices and believes that Ngoma is a proto-Bantu consciousness that predates any forms of animism\,\nreligion\, or spiritual practice on the African Continent. Therefore\, the artistic\nexpression of Ngoma can be treated as a key to unlocking the medicinal and spiritual\nrichness of our ancient ancestry through its practice. \nThus\, Kwasukasukela Arts Collective will hope to explore this richness through 2\ndays of co-creative workshops in Berlin at Oyoun on the 24 and 25 of January 2023.\nThrough outlining the many properties sound medicine and movement medicine\nhave\, we will aim to co-curate and facilitate a congregation of Ngoma as an\nAfrocentric path of enlightenment. The workshop will aim to teach people the power\nof their own voice and body through an African healing ecology rooted in an ancient\nart form Ngoma\, which originates in southern Africa\, pre-coloniality. \nTicket: 10 Euro \nRegistration in advance is required. For registration please email your name and surname to kartscollective@gmail.com  \nLanguage: English \nNotes: Bring comfortable clothing and small mat if you have \n  \nBIOGRAPHIES \nCebolenkosi Zuma \nCebolenkosi Zuma (The Dancing Herbalist) was born in 1993 in Pietermarizburg\,\nSouth Africa. He graduated from the University of Cape Town [UCT] (2015) with a\nDiploma in Dance Education\, Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Dance Studies\nFET) (2019)\, an Honours degree in Applied Theatre & Dance (2021)\, and is\ncurrently a Masters candidate in Music at the same university.\nTrained in (South) African indigenous forms of dance\, he seamlessly blends his\nroots with his knowledge in western contemporary and African contemporary\ndance/movement. His work seeks to explore the dissemination of knowledge\nthrough African folk music and various aesthetics of African traditional dance\,\nthereby within this context\, interpreting music and dance as indigenous schools of\nthought. His interest in the spiritual within sound and movement is a key component\nthat helps him navigate through teaching\, and movement facilitations in his practice.\nCebolenkosi has been involved in numerous projects in and outside South Africa. He\nwas co-choreographed and performed at UCT Ibuyambo Orchestra called Jarabi which\ntoured Matola\, Mozambique (2016). Through the tutelage of Dr Patrick Acogny\, Zuma\nparticipated in a dance exchange programme at Ecole des Sables\, in Toubab Dialaw\,\nSenegal (2016) where he collaborated with Fannie Falk Faye and seven other dancers\nto create a short film called “DIG IT” which showed at the Stockholm Dansfilm Festival\n(2017). As a freelancer at Sibonelo Dance Project in Cape Town (2016) he taught\nAfrican contemporary dance in their development programme\, and performed with the\ncompany in “1976 Spirits”\, a production curated by Mandla Mbothwe at Artscape\nTheatre\, and “Abangabonwa” (which won the National Arts Festival 2016 Standing\nOvation award) at the Kasi 2 Kasi festival\, Cape Town. That same year\, was a resident\nartist at UCT: South African College of Music’s African Music department\, he taught\nAfrican indigenous dance\, and taught a master class at UCT: School of Dance.\nWorking for Vuyani Dance Theatre\, as an apprentice (2017)\, he made his mark with the\ncompany as he danced alongside Gregory Maqoma in a successful season premiere of\nMaqoma’s award-winning Cion\, at The Market Theatre.\nHe is now a full-time artist at Kwasukasukela Arts Collective\, an organisation he co-\nfounded in 2016\, where he and the Collective have performed their work Umsamo at\nthe Dance Umbrella Africa at the South African State Theatre\, Pretoria\, Theatre Arts\nAdmin Collective\, Cape Town (2019)\, and Northern Cape Theatre (2021)\, and; a recent\noffering Sicel’ Ukukhanya at (Un)Infecting the City (2021). Since then he has also\nworked with internationally renounced artists such as Shane Cooper\, Mbuso Khoza\,\nJonno Sweetman\, Linda Sikhakhane\, Msaki\, and Nduduzo Makhathini. \nNkosenathi Ernie Koela \nNkosenathi Ernie Koela is a Ph.D candidate specializing in\nindigenous music therapies at the University of Cape Town. Koela’s interdisciplinary\npractice encompasses being an Afrikan multi-instrumentalist\, he explores how\nhealing practices through sound\, creates space that manifests spiritually and\nmaterially. Koela has been a performer and instrumentalist for over 16 years\, and\nplays multitude of indigenous instruments from around the world. He also teaches\nothers how to play traditional instruments with strong emphasis on the instruments\nh’story\, spiritual significance and importance.\n \nThis he does as testament to his ancestry\, the long line/s of traditional\ninstrumentalists\, diviners/ healers (amaGqirha namaXhwele) that run in his family\,\nwho are masters of traditional San\, Bantu\, and Nguni music/heritage. DESCRIPTION:This series is called "The Berlin Cultural Majlis". A similar version has already been organised in Washington D.C. by Sultan Al-Qassemi and was very well received by the intellectual scene in the American capital. \nThe series of talks should offer Berlin/European based artists from the MENA region a platform in Berlin to present their works and discuss them with the audience in Berlin. \nThe kick-off event will take place on 14 January\, where Syrian artist Ziad Dalloul will present his work and Sultan will moderate a Q&A session with him. DESCRIPTION:Draw Me Close is a solo\, multidisciplinary performance that combines drawing with dance.\nThe walls and floor are covered in large sheets of paper\, and Matagumpay is a medium for mark-making. Alone\, he can only move languidly\, aimlessly\, producing weak and noncommittal lines. At what point will you interrupt? Lead him in dance\, or guide his hand\, to draw together. Adopt stewardship over his body\, over the movement and the marks. What do you desire to see\, and how messy would you get to make it happen? Depression doesn’t lift magically. \nDraw Me Close is a staging of trust. Not an abandonment of personal responsibility\, not a resignation to defeat\, but an insistence that when I make myself this weak\, I will be held so closely. There must be something worth surrendering to. \n*This is an interactive performance. DESCRIPTION:Afrikakzent Media e.V. lädt herzlich zur Ausstellungseröffnung von "Andere Perspektiven – Gesicht zeigen" ein! \nIn diesem Projekt geht es darum\, Menschen mit afrikanischen Bezügen anhand ihrer Tätigkeit vorzustellen. Dies geschieht in maximal 10-minütigen Video - Porträts\, in denen die Protagonist*innen mit der Kamera durch ihren beruflichen Alltag\nbegleitet werden und dabei neben Einblicken in ihre Lebensrealitäten hier auch Einsichten in ihre Herkunftskultur und die Hintergründe ihrer Migration geben. \nDadurch erhalten die Zuschauer*innen neben den persönlichen Geschichten gleichzeitig allgemeine Einblicke in das Leben von Menschen im globalen Süden. Dabei ist es wichtig\, die Perspektive Menschen afrikanischer Herkunft ins Zentrum zu rücken. \nDie Ausstellung ist täglich von 12:00 bis 19:00 Uhr geöffnet \nÜber den Verein: \nafrikAkzent Media e.V. ist ein kosmopolitischer Verein\, der auf multimedialen Kanälen eine lebendige Sphäre des Meinungsaustausches bezüglich des Zusammenlebens unterschiedlicher Ethnien und Nationalitäten innerhalb der Gesellschaft fördern möchte. \nDie Philosophie des Vereins fußt daher neben der Dekonstruktion immer noch existierender Afrika - Stereotype und rassistischer Klischees vor allem auf dem Wunsch\, Schwarze Bürger*innen in den Medien als bereichernden\, aktiven und\nebenbürtigen Teil der deutschen Gesellschaft darzustellen. SUMMARY:Poetry meets SOUNDS w/ Douniah & Damian Soul
DESCRIPTION:The Poetry Meets Series presents its first edition of Poetry Meets SOUNDS celebrating alternative music\, sound art and the intersecting power of poetry. \nENTRY: 7PM | START: 8PM \nTicket: via Eventbrite \nMAIN ACTS: \nDouniah \nDouniah creates art that breaks boundaries. Her sense of aesthetics is reflected in both her music and her visual productions. Her sound reflects Gnawa and Northafrican jazz as well as soul\, jazz\, hip-hop and poetry. In her work\, Douniah illuminates herself and her surroundings with a critical and strong voice. She combines her perspective and observations on identity\, belonging and mental health in her lyrics. Born in Agadir\, Morocco\, raised in Hamburg and now Berlin-based\, the German-Moroccan released her first project - "Dream Baby '' - in 2019 on Cologne-based label Melting Pot Music together with producer High John. A collaborative album heavily influenced by jazz samples\, neo-soul and poetry. She either produced or co-produced the music videos for the project. This was most recently the case for Ebow's single "Friends''\, which was released in summer 2020. Douniah is also part of the Berlin collective Out Of Time Embassy and worked on the "Are You For Real" project for IFA. She has also made a name for herself as a feature guest on tracks by Farhot\, 2Kings and AgaJon. She graced the cover of the Spotify playlist "Butter''. As a pre-act\, Douniah played shows with Children of Zeus and accompanied Sudan Archives and JuJu Rogers & Negroman on tour. She is currently working with Berlin producer Dhanya (Modha\, Juju Rogers) on her first solo EP\, which will be released on Melting Pot Music in 2023. \nDamian Soul \nDamian Soul is a Tanzanian singer\, songwriter\, composer and guitarist. Born and raised in Dar es Salaam’s cultural melting pot Sinza\, Damian is one of the most talented musicians in East Africa\, performing a variety of musical styles such as Afro Soul\, Afro Jazz\, R&B\, and Bongo Flava fusion. \n  \nSPECIAL GUEST: \nMTCHL \nStreet musician and singer songwriter MTCHL rarely leaves home without a guitar or skateboard. The 24-year-old from Heilbronn lives in Berlin and learned to play guitar at the age of 12 and wrote her first song at 16. Her English lyrics are self-reflective and socially critical\, her sound inspired by rnb artists like H.E.R.\, PJ Morton\, Kehlani and SiR. She is currently working on several singles and an EP. \n  \nPOETS & SOUND ARTISTS: \nElsa M'bala (cover photo) \nElsa M'bala was born in Yaoundé\, the capitol of Cameroon. Her family moved to South-West Germany\, where M'bala visited an international school and learned to express herself in various languages. In 2009 M'bala co-created the Pan-African feminist poetry duo „Rising Thoughts". From 2012 to 2016 she moves back to Cameroon where she developed a new artistic language\, between visual and sonic explorations. Her current work uses voices and online samples in the form of transcoding\, code switching and algorithms patterns\, building a fine print of electronic griotage reaching from the past into the future. Mixing analogue and digital sound machines as well as electronic and acoustic instruments to experiment with speeches\, rituals and poetry. Elsa M’bala work Addis’63 is a sound performance that explore the complexities and dualities of life\, always torn between the aim to balance the inner with the outer world\, the spiritual quest for identity. Using the total submergence of electronic sound and the rhythmical properties of Ekang/Bikutsi rhythms of the Beti people of central Africa to help us reconnect with the mythological\, the spiritual and the imaginary. As the philosopher Mudimbe said\, Africa is an invention\, for that matter Africans have to (re-)invent themselves. \nYèni \nYèni is a musician with roots in Guinea\, Ghana and Germany. Her love for music was influenced by her musical family\, including her father “Linguist”\, a founding member of the hip hop band Advanced Chemistry. Yèni has been singing\, playing the guitar and the piano since childhood. She is a lead singer and composer in the Pan-African band Origin\, based in Conakry\, Guinea. Yèni is known for her sweet voice and her broad musical repertoire\, including Soul\, Afrobeats\, Reggae\, and House. \n  \nSPOTLIGHT ARTIST:  \nFeyisike Adetula (Ayansike) is a 17 year old creative talking drummer\, who started playing the gangan (talking drum) at about 11 years old. Her dream is to infuse contemporary art with the talking drum\, a feat she is thriving at.
