SUMMARY:Workshop by Kwasukasukela Arts Collective | Ngoma Consciousness
DESCRIPTION:The etymology of the Root word ‘Ngoma’ is found amongst many nations’ tribes and\nregions in southern\, central and West Africa. Janzen argued that Ngoma is a proto-\nBantu cognate within which exists an ecology of related institutions such as the\npractice of medicine\, divination\, crafts\, music\, and ritual. Kwasukasukela Arts Collective practices and believes that Ngoma is a proto-Bantu consciousness that predates any forms of animism\,\nreligion\, or spiritual practice on the African Continent. Therefore\, the artistic\nexpression of Ngoma can be treated as a key to unlocking the medicinal and spiritual\nrichness of our ancient ancestry through its practice. \nThus\, Kwasukasukela Arts Collective will hope to explore this richness through 2\ndays of co-creative workshops in Berlin at Oyoun on the 24 and 25 of January 2023.\nThrough outlining the many properties sound medicine and movement medicine\nhave\, we will aim to co-curate and facilitate a congregation of Ngoma as an\nAfrocentric path of enlightenment. The workshop will aim to teach people the power\nof their own voice and body through an African healing ecology rooted in an ancient\nart form Ngoma\, which originates in southern Africa\, pre-coloniality. \nTicket: 10 Euro \nRegistration in advance is required. For registration please email your name and surname to kartscollective@gmail.com \nLanguage: English \nNotes: Bring comfortable clothing and small mat if you have \n \nBIOGRAPHIES \nCebolenkosi Zuma \nCebolenkosi Zuma (The Dancing Herbalist) was born in 1993 in Pietermarizburg\,\nSouth Africa. She came to music late\, she says – “It's never late\, but late in the perspective of that I'm doing it now\,” – almost as if by fate. And throughout her time in the music scene\, the 33-year-old has used her music as an exercise in capturing those moments and putting them into song\, as if a snapshot of the intimate parts of her own life. Her debut album "Voice Notes" is yet another record of those moments. It follows on from three stunning EP’s; "Black Moon" (2017)\, "When The Sun Dips 90 Degrees" (2018) and "Morning Matters" (2020)\, a trilogy of sorts\, named in part by the settings in which they were written. She has gained support from Evening Standard\, The Guardian and BBC Radio 6 Music\, holds fans in the likes of Questlove and notably appeared on COLORS in 2020 with the song "On Your Own". \nSpecial Guest: \nMariam Sawires \nMariam is a nomadic Egyptian-Australian Contemporary Soul / Arabic singer songwriter and painter who performs and shares her music and paintings around the world. She has performed in Colombia\, Japan\, France\, Germany\, Australia\, Tanzania and Egypt where her voice is often described as silky\, smooth and spiritual. In the last years\, her music has been praised by triple j’s Richard Kingsmill\, Unearthed\, Double J\, FBi Radio\, Pilerats\, Purple Sneakers\, Fashion Journal and BIGSOUND. Now with her feet firmly planted back in Australia\, Mariam Sawires is taking to the field she’s known she was always meant for and ready to thrive. \nZainab Lax \nZainab Lax is Community Music therapist and Multiinstrumentalist and has specialized on music as empowerment with displaced people. She plays harp since she was 7 years old but is also familiar with some ‘eastern’ musical styles. Her inspiring loop-perfomances are mostly shaped by improvisation and will invite you to groove and dream. \nPoets: \nokcandice \nokcandice is a writer\, artist-curator\, and musician between Birmingham and Berlin. They are the founder of the queer film series all fruits ripe and a co-founding member of the collectives poet & prophetess and Bredryn. When they're not performing or curating\, okcandice hosts Bedtime Stories on Cashmere Radio and Must Be The Music on Refuge Worldwide. \nSenthuran Varatharajah \nSenthuran Varatharajah is a multi-award winning German-Tamil novelist\, poet\, philosopher and theologian. Born in Jaffna\, Sri Lanka\, his family had to flee to Germany due to the genocide and civil war when he was four months old. His debut novel\, Vor der Zunahme der Zeichen (Before the Increase of Signs) was published in 2016\, his second novel Rot (Hunger) (Red (Hunger)) in spring 2022\, both with S. Fischer. \nQuang Nguyễn-Xuân \nQuang Nguyễn-Xuân (they/them) is a transfem non-binary writer\, community organizer\, political educator\, poet of color. Quang's poetry & prose seeks words on the legacy of transgenerational silence\, breaks waves in the tides of loss and re-membering\, and dreams of utopias sustained by community care\, queer worldmaking and collective healing. \nVortex: \nTo apply for participation\, please email us with an example of your work of art: poetry\, music\, movement etc. via booking@poetrymeets.com \nDGS live interpretation of German poetry texts available. SUMMARY:Food\, Film\, Party | Vibrations of Blackness: Connecting The Diaspora With The Continent
DESCRIPTION:A series of performances\, films\, food\, and after-party celebrating Black History Month.\nCurated by Blindian Project \nVibrations of Blackness is a curated evening of performances\, film\, food and dance that connects the diaspora with the continent. In honour of Black History Month\, it aims to bring the BlindianProject ethos of celebrating Black x Brown culture to Berlin with the hope of learning more about this community in Germany. \n:: Bridge Back Home: Traditional Food // 18:00 p.m. \n"An investment in understanding the origins of another's food tradition is a powerful means of showing love and commitment." \n-Chelli Keshavan \nFood nourishes our souls and is essential for survival. In addition\, it is the center and the creator of community\, seamlessly bringing people of various cultures\, races\, religions\, etc.\, to the same table. \nUsing Ugandan cuisine as a medium\, which is heavily influenced by English\, Arab\, and South Asian culture\, postcolonial conversations are never far away. \nThis performance art piece uses traditional food to bring people together\, encouraging them to open their hearts and minds to shifting perceptions and spark conversations that aren’t always possible in a fast-moving\, segregated society. \n** Vegetarian menu (tbc) Served from 18:00\, and available while supplies last .** \n:: When We Own Our Narratives: Film Screenings + Q&A // 20:00 pm \nFor centuries\, Black x Brown people have been at the mercy of others who tell their stories. From the creation of social constructs like race to justify slavery and racial hierarchies to minstrel shows and negative depictions of Africa\, we can see the cynicism created when Black and Brown people don't own their narratives. \nThose on the frontline of the fight against white supremacy and institutional racism realize that allyship is essential to win this battle. However\, they often wonder if they are savvy enough to raise our voices. \nSix short films centering the Black experience were curated from the U.S.A\, Canada\, U.K. and Uganda after a worldwide open call. After watching each film\, the audience is asked to determine which perspective the film was created from. By starting a conversation around how we perceive our communities\, you can consider what intentional solidarity looks like. \n:: Soundtrack: DJs // 22:00 p.m. \n"Music is a cultural element that simultaneously evokes strong memories and cuts across barriers such as race\, class\, religion\, gender\, etc. while bringing people together." \nThe selectors for the evening\, consisting of both local and international DJs\, will traverse a diverse range of sounds from Kingston\, Jamaica\, to New York City\, to Accra to Mumbai\, and other far-away places. \n-- \nTickets via Eventbrite \nStrugging to afford tickets? The core team consists of eight people each contributing a wide range of different skills and knowledge around photography. Besides their queerness that connects them\, it is also their different identities and experiences of discrimination or marginalization that shape the collective work and perspectives on photography. QAD wants to make knowledge around analog photography accessible\, to those who are often denied access due to their identities and/or experiences of marginalization. \n––– \nThere is no place at Oyoun for sexism\, queerphobia\, transphobia\, any form of racism or discrimination such as anti-black\, anti-Muslim racism or anti-Semitism. SUMMARY:Filmfestival Wake up Europe | Screening: Grbavica\, Land of My Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Screening\, followed by panel discussion on topic of Wartime sexual violence\nLanguage: OMU Bosnian with English Subtitles \nABOUT the movie Grbavica – The Land of my Dreams \nGRBAVICA is a story about contemporary Sarajevo…Single mother Esma wants to grant her twelve-year-old daughter Sara's wish to participate in a school trip. A certificate proving her father is a war martyr would allow her a discount. But Esma continues to avoid Sara's requests for the certificate. She would rather find a way to pay full price for the trip. She believes not telling the truth about Sara's father is a way to protect both her and her daughter. \nABOUT Nena Močnik\nResearcher\, educator and community practitioner in peace education\, violence prevention and sociotherapy. Author of ‘War-related Sexual Violence and Trauma Transmission: Reconciliation and Peacebuilding in Post-Conflict Settings’ (Routledge 2020) and ‘Sexuality after War Rape: From Narrative to Embodied Research’ (Routledge 2017). In 2014\, she was a Fulbright visiting researcher at University of Southern California\, USA\, in 2015 Brown International Advanced Research Institute Fellow (Brown University\, Rhode Island\, US) and in 2016\, the International Centre on Non-Violent Conflict\, (Tufts University\, Massachusetts\, US) Fellow. As an applied drama practitioner she focuses on community work and eductation on the topic of political & mass violence\, discrimination\, and sexuality. She is also an author of several forum theatre performances on human rights violation and her own monodrama\, Canned (slo. Konzervirano). \n\nABOUT Dr. Kateryna Busol \nDr Kateryna Busol is a Ukrainian lawyer specialising in international human rights\, humanitarian\, criminal law\, transitional justice\, gender and cultural heritage protection. She holds an LLB\, LLM and PhD from the Institute of International Relations of Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University and an LLM from the University of Cambridge. After a brief period of corporate work for KPMG and Clifford Chance and with the outbreak of armed conflicts in Ukraine\, Kateryna resumed her practice in public international law. She consulted the Ukrainian side on the Scythian Gold case. In 2015-2019 Kateryna worked for Global Rights Compliance (GRC). Within GRC\, she consulted Ukrainian state actors and NGOs on the best practices of investigating and prosecuting international crimes and on the cooperation with the International Criminal Court (ICC). \nThe event is funded by the European Academy Berlin (EAB) and the Alfred Toepfer Foundation. \nRegistration for the 04.02.2023 \nOther events of this series will take place on the 11th and 18th of February. \nDetails for the 11.02.2023 \nDetails for the 18.02.2023 \n––– \nABOUT Did We Really Wake Up? \nDiscussions about European wars are a sensitive and highly relevant issue. Showing three selected films about the wars in the Western Balkans is intended to inform on the one hand\, but on the other hand also to draw parallels with the news we receive from Ukraine on a daily basis\, in order to raise awareness of emotional\, material and institutional ramifications that these wars result in. \nYoung people in particular often lack information which\, among other things\, leads to the fact that some perceive the Russian war against Ukraine as the "first war in Europe since the end of the Second World War". We want to point out this blind spot and dare to try to clear it up. By showing the following films Grbavica- Land of My Dreams\, Quo Vadis Aida? and Hive\, the topics of genocide\, sexual violence\, coming to terms with the past\, or the reconstruction after a war\, will be addressed. \nWith the three film screenings and subsequent moderated audience discussions\, the project promotes the exchange between experts from various domains (NGO representatives\, filmmakers and film theorists\, academics with a research focus on war crimes\, sexual violence and reconciliation) from the affected areas and young people. The project contributes to anchoring the wars in the Western Balkans in European memory and to providing young people with perspectives to analyse and understand today's Russian war against Ukraine. \n*The event will be held in English.* \n––– \nEuropean Academy Berlin (EAB) \nThe organizer is an international team of students and young professionals from Germany\, France\, Italy\, Bosnia and Herzegovina\, Kosovo and Ukraine\, who came together in 2021 in the context of a workshop on transnational solidarity in the Bosnian war\, to address the issue of wars in Europe and their significance for civil society in light of current events in Ukraine. \n––– \nImages by ©Valeriia Vradii \n

SUMMARY:Filmfestival Wake up Europe | Screening: Quo Vadis Aida
DESCRIPTION:Screening\, followed by panel discussion on the topic of genocide \nLanguage: OMU Bosnian\, English\, Dutch with English Subtitles \nABOUT the movie Quo Vadis Aida? \nQUO VADIS\, AIDA? tells of just a few dramatic days in the life of a woman whose fate stands for that of an entire generation of women who survived the war in Bosnia. More than 8000 civilians - almost all of them male - were murdered and buried in mass graves by the Bosnian Serb army in the Srebrenica massacre\, which is classified as genocide. It is considered the most serious war crime in Europe since the end of World War II. In addition to the atrocious acts of Ratko Mladić's army\, the role of the United Nations has also been sharply criticized in connection with the massacre. July 2020 marked the 25th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre\, and to this day it seems incomprehensible that such a catastrophe could occur before the eyes of the international community\, in the middle of Europe. \nABOUT Elida Vikić \nElida Vikić is an associate for the Europe and Central Asia division of Human Rights Watch. She is involved in work around human rights issues in the EU\, Turkey\, and the Western Balkans. Prior to joining Human Rights Watch\, Elida worked on investigating women’s rights violations and post-war reconciliation efforts in the Balkans with the Center for Narrative and Conflict Resolution. Previously she worked in the US Congress. SUMMARY:Filmfestival Wake up Europe | Screening: Hive
DESCRIPTION:Screening\, followed by panel discussion on the topic of rebuilding after the war \nLanguage: OMU Albanian with English Subtitles \nABOUT the movie Hive\nFahrije's husband has been missing since the Kosovo war and\, in addition to her grief\, her family is also struggling financially.\nTo support them\, she starts a small farming business\, but in the traditional patriarchal village where she lives\, her ambition and efforts to empower herself and other women are not seen as a positive. She not only struggles to keep her family afloat\, but also against a hostile community that longs for her failure. \nABOUT Blerta Basholli (director)\nBlerta Basholli is a writer and director; her previous work is characterized by a realistic visual style. Basholli's stories touch on social and gender issues from Kosovo\, where she was born and raised. She lived and studied in New York\, where she worked on her first film projects. In 2008 she was honoured with the Deans Fellowship of the Film Graduate Program at the Tisch New York University School of the Arts. In 2011 she returned to her birthplace\, where she contributed as an author and director on numerous short and feature films. HIVE is her feature film debut\, its development she has worked on since 2011. \nThe event is funded by the European Academy Berlin (EAB) and the Alfred Toepfer Foundation. \nRegistration for the 18.02.2023 \n––– \nABOUT Did We Really Wake Up? \n*The event will be held in English.* \n––– \nEuropean Academy Berlin (EAB) \nThe organizer is an international team of students and young professionals from Germany\, France\, Italy\, Bosnia and Herzegovina\, Kosovo and Ukraine\, who came together in 2021 in the context of a workshop on transnational solidarity in the Bosnian war\, to address the issue of wars in Europe and their significance for civil society in light of current events in Ukraine.Europe \n

SUMMARY:Itinerant Geographies – A Proposition for Radical Unbelonging
DESCRIPTION:I have invited a group of friends and colleagues to "unbelong together"\, which resulted in the exchange of practices that make up this program. Following an intuition that gardens\, as places of the "could have been" and the "could be"\, that is\, of failure and hope\, could be the lenses\, the place\, the set of practices\, the impetus\, and/or the systems through and by which to approach issues of belonging/unbelonging\, away from state coercion and other identity politics and determinisms\, I invited them to respond to this intuition with their own practices. \nI hope this exchange will create resonances and conjunctions for new territories\, though it might as well (miss)lead us to dead ends and false connections. Practices of "unbelonging together"\, if they are to be radical\, conceive of displacement as a place of curiosity and strive to create empathy that puts identity and even futurity at risk and\, most importantly\, help us conceive of other ways of being together\, of making collective. \nWe invite you to be part of this experiment\, take part in our practice propositions\, and bring your own practices and your own ways of being or "unbelonging together". \nDiana De Fex\n(Curator/project initiator) \nFree Entry! \n6th to 14th of April \nNo registration required\, except for the open sessions. She studied Applied Theatre at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2003)\, Dance at Rallou Manou\, Athens (2011)\, and Choreography and Performance at JLU in Germany (2019). In her work she focuses on the relationships among identity\, current events\, and poetics\, experimenting with how geographies can be expressed by the utopic medium of performance. Her works Willow trees exist\, Cotton flowers exist\, Apricot Trees exist or an Impossible walk\, Don’t kill the messenger\, Zones of Immaterial Pictorial Sensibility\, Nekri Fysi\, Icono-Stasis have been presented in Giessen\, Frankfurt\, Kassel\, Darmstadt\, Mannheim\, Berlin and Athens. She lives and works in Giessen. \nNitish Jain (b.1989) is an immersive storyteller working across the mediums of architecture\, performance art\, and installations. He is the founder of Studio MoreThanThat\, an artistic [agency/practice] that makes multi-sensory experiences. They invite audiences to sense rather than see their works by incorporating touch\, taste\, smell\, listening\, and seeing in different ways. Nitish trained as an architect and as a scenographer. He was born in India and he currently lives and works in Prague\, Czechia. \nDiana De Fex is a performer\, choreographer\, and art pedagogue using artistic methods (narrative storytelling\, autoethnography\, somatics) to explore human- environment relations and politics beyond identity and representation. They is interested in researching non-binary and non-linear logics and perceptions\, freedom of speech and of dissent as well as restorative justice. She/they is currently completing an MA in Choreography and Performance at the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies-Giessen. \nOlga Popova is a Ukrainian artist educated in film\, theater\, and acting and based in Germany. Her interest lies in the plasticity of the environment and its translation and transformation into the stage or other non-theatrical spaces. She is currently enrolled\nin the MA Applied Theater Studies program in Giessen with a specialization in Performing Arts Practice. \nChristian Maturana describe themselves as a drop of water in the ocean. \nFabián Franco Márquez is a visual artist working in scenography and painting (murals\, billboarding\, and street art) as well as art pedagogy. He graduated from the University of Cluj-Napoca and currently lives and works in Leipzig. \nVincent Viala works as a musician and music educator in various formats\, and in theatrical-performative contexts backstage. In addition to solo and band projects ranging from garage-punk to singer-songwriter\, to experimental improvisation\, Viala works on compositional experiments and fragments\, which go in various directions of acoustic/time-based art. "Misappropriation" of conventional instruments\, or electronic and sample-based are preferred techniques here\, which also come to bear especially in the musical accompaniment of performing art. Thereby he moves in the absurd\, in experiment and noise\, in improvisation\, in melancholy and dissonance\, as well as in the fragile\, in the little\, in repetition\, in the atmospheric. Spontaneity\, expressivity\, freedom of means and material\, and the unique capacity of sound to create emotional meaning are important themes in his work. Since 2017\, Viala has been studying B.A. Music Education with minors in Musicology and Sociology at the JLU in Giessen. \n\nSupported by Fonds Darstellende Künste with funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media within the program NEUSTART KULTUR. \nIn Oyoun there is no place for sexism\, queer hostility\, transphobia\, any form of racism or discrimination such as anti-Black\, anti-Muslim racism or anti-Semitism.
