DESCRIPTION:A series of performances\, films\, food\, and after-party celebrating Black History Month.\nCurated by Blindian Project \nVibrations of Blackness is a curated evening of performances\, film\, food and dance that connects the diaspora with the continent. In honour of Black History Month\, it aims to bring the BlindianProject ethos of celebrating Black x Brown culture to Berlin with the hope of learning more about this community in Germany.  \n:: Bridge Back Home: Traditional Food // 18:00 p.m. \n"An investment in understanding the origins of another's food tradition is a powerful means of showing love and commitment." \n-Chelli Keshavan \nFood nourishes our souls and is essential for survival. In addition\, it is the center and the creator of community\, seamlessly bringing people of various cultures\, races\, religions\, etc.\, to the same table. \nUsing Ugandan cuisine as a medium\, which is heavily influenced by English\, Arab\, and South Asian culture\, postcolonial conversations are never far away. \nThis performance art piece uses traditional food to bring people together\, encouraging them to open their hearts and minds to shifting perceptions and spark conversations that aren’t always possible in a fast-moving\, segregated society. \n** Vegetarian menu (tbc) Served from 18:00\, and available while supplies last .** \n:: When We Own Our Narratives: Film Screenings + Q&A // 20:00 pm \nFor centuries\, Black x Brown people have been at the mercy of others who tell their stories. From the creation of social constructs like race to justify slavery and racial hierarchies to minstrel shows and negative depictions of Africa\, we can see the cynicism created when Black and Brown people don't own their narratives. \nThose on the frontline of the fight against white supremacy and institutional racism realize that allyship is essential to win this battle. However\, they often wonder if they are savvy enough to raise our voices. \nSix short films centering the Black experience were curated from the U.S.A\, Canada\, U.K. and Uganda after a worldwide open call. After watching each film\, the audience is asked to determine which perspective the film was created from. Founded in 2021\, Pretty Gang quickly gained popularity with their fun shows\, which combine music and dance. In 2022 Pretty Gang played the well-known HÖR Berlin format and made history by being the first DJs to represent authentic Dancehall and Soca music on the platform. The collective was founded to combat the lack of visibility of FLINTA* and BIPOC* from the Caribbean & African diaspora in the German Dancehall & Soca scene and is looking to welcoming more members in the future. \nPam bam \nPam bam is a Berlin-based music selector who began her journey in Ghana. When she stood behind the decks for the first time in Accra\, it was all about sharing her passion and love for good music – especially Old School Hip Hop and RnB. Spending almost two years in Ghana\, she encountered Afrobeats and Afro House — which has influenced her djing to the bone. Her musical selection is East & West coast meets electronic dance music from African metropoles such as Lagos\, Accra\, Luanda\, and Johannesburg. Linking her Hip-hop background and African roots together\, Pam Bam has a unique and boppy sound that no one can resist dancing to. #PAMBAMSOUND \nFor Pam Bam\, it is all about making people dance\, losing themselves in time and space\, and sharing and promoting the richness of African contemporary music across the globe. \nSamrai\n\nProducer\, DJ\, Educator & Director (Balraj) Samrai is one of the founding members of Manchester’s Swing Ting party and record label – profiled by the Guardian\, Resident Advisor\, FACT magazine & Bandcamp Daily. He's also the co-founder of SEEN Magazine created by global majority and marginalised communities which aims to celebrate unheard voices and stories. Samrai has been a guest on BBC Asian Network\, Radio 1\, 1Xtra & BBC 6 Music as well as co-hosting a radio show on NTS Live. He's released music on record labels such as Unknown to the Unknown\, Don’t Be Afraid\, Keysound\, Niche N Bump\, Night Slugs & Fat City\, performing\, recording & delivering workshops all over Europe as well as in Armenia\, Canada\, Colombia\, Jamaica\, India & Thailand. \nGavsborg \nHailing from East Kingston is Jamaican is music producer\, Gavin “Gavsborg” Blair; Gavin has been producing under the label Equiknoxx Music for over ten (10) years. DESCRIPTION:Screening\, followed by panel discussion on topic of Wartime sexual violence\nLanguage: OMU Bosnian with English Subtitles \nABOUT the movie Grbavica – The Land of my Dreams \nGRBAVICA is a story about contemporary Sarajevo…Single mother Esma wants to grant her twelve-year-old daughter Sara's wish to participate in a school trip. A certificate proving her father is a war martyr would allow her a discount. But Esma continues to avoid Sara's requests for the certificate. She would rather find a way to pay full price for the trip. She believes not telling the truth about Sara's father is a way to protect both her and her daughter. \nABOUT Nena Močnik\nResearcher\, educator and community practitioner in peace education\, violence prevention and sociotherapy. Author of ‘War-related Sexual Violence and Trauma Transmission: Reconciliation and Peacebuilding in Post-Conflict Settings’ (Routledge 2020) and ‘Sexuality after War Rape: From Narrative to Embodied Research’ (Routledge 2017). In 2014\, she was a Fulbright visiting researcher at University of Southern California\, USA\, in 2015 Brown International Advanced Research Institute Fellow (Brown University\, Rhode Island\, US) and in 2016\, the International Centre on Non-Violent Conflict\, (Tufts University\, Massachusetts\, US) Fellow. As an applied drama practitioner she focuses on community work and eductation on the topic of political & mass violence\, discrimination\, and sexuality. She is also an author of several forum theatre performances on human rights violation and her own monodrama\, Canned (slo. Konzervirano). \n\nABOUT Dr. Kateryna Busol \nDr Kateryna Busol is a Ukrainian lawyer specialising in international human rights\, humanitarian\, criminal law\, transitional justice\, gender and cultural heritage protection. She holds an LLB\, LLM and PhD from the Institute of International Relations of Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University and an LLM from the University of Cambridge. After a brief period of corporate work for KPMG and Clifford Chance and with the outbreak of armed conflicts in Ukraine\, Kateryna resumed her practice in public international law. She consulted the Ukrainian side on the Scythian Gold case. In 2015-2019 Kateryna worked for Global Rights Compliance (GRC). Within GRC\, she consulted Ukrainian state actors and NGOs on the best practices of investigating and prosecuting international crimes and on the cooperation with the International Criminal Court (ICC). \nThe event is funded by the European Academy Berlin (EAB) and the Alfred Toepfer Foundation. \nRegistration for the 04.02.2023  \nOther events of this series will take place on the 11th and 18th of February.  \nDetails for the 11.02.2023  \nDetails for the 18.02.2023 \n––– \nABOUT Did We Really Wake Up? \nDiscussions about European wars are a sensitive and highly relevant issue. Showing three selected films about the wars in the Western Balkans is intended to inform on the one hand\, but on the other hand also to draw parallels with the news we receive from Ukraine on a daily basis\, in order to raise awareness of emotional\, material and institutional ramifications that these wars result in. \nYoung people in particular often lack information which\, among other things\, leads to the fact that some perceive the Russian war against Ukraine as the "first war in Europe since the end of the Second World War". We want to point out this blind spot and dare to try to clear it up. By showing the following films Grbavica- Land of My Dreams\, Quo Vadis Aida? and Hive\, the topics of genocide\, sexual violence\, coming to terms with the past\, or the reconstruction after a war\, will be addressed. \nWith the three film screenings and subsequent moderated audience discussions\, the project promotes the exchange between experts from various domains (NGO representatives\, filmmakers and film theorists\, academics with a research focus on war crimes\, sexual violence and reconciliation) from the affected areas and young people. The project contributes to anchoring the wars in the Western Balkans in European memory and to providing young people with perspectives to analyse and understand today's Russian war against Ukraine. \n*The event will be held in English.* \n––– \nEuropean Academy Berlin (EAB) \nThe organizer is an international team of students and young professionals from Germany\, France\, Italy\, Bosnia and Herzegovina\, Kosovo and Ukraine\, who came together in 2021 in the context of a workshop on transnational solidarity in the Bosnian war\, to address the issue of wars in Europe and their significance for civil society in light of current events in Ukraine. \n––– \nImages by ©Valeriia Vradii \n
