Video for the AS* PAPANGUS Performance Berlin
our carnival, our body, our fight
Fatima - Mizgina - Natalia - Dami - Jahia - Katia - Pamela - Natascha - Thais - Bruna:
10 women* came together on a Friday evening in May, not knowing what to expect, but believing in a common space - a community of women* who fight, demand, love and share. They opened up and let others take part in their lives: that they celebrate themselves. That they honor their freedom. That they are the pillars of mutual resilience. That they are mightier than a trampled flower. That the streets belong to them and yet they have to become safer. That they recognize their beings as they are. that they are here. Less than twenty hours after they first met, they were on the street together. With the papangu mask on their heads, they danced to the sounds produced by the instruments in their hands. They didn't have to make themselves vulnerable. Because they were together. The documentation for the performance is now online here.

AS* PAPANGUS
AS* PAPANGUS critically engages with the colonial structure of carnival, vigilantly confronting the oppressive gaze and not allowing the exploitation of queer, racialized, women's*, disabled and structurally oppressed bodies. Papangu women* do not take to the streets to be consumed, but to celebrate themselves.
AS* PAPANGUS opens the first chapter of Oyoun's curatorial focus Mightier than a Trampled Flower, which focuses on the lives of women* in wars in a decolonial context and deconstructs the canonical narratives of women* in war.
