PROFILE

Bruna Amaro

Bruna Amaro is an Afro-Brazilian artist, performer, educator, researcher and percussionist based in São Paulo, Brazil.

My artistic work in recent years has moved along the three axes of carnival, art and politics. Drawing on theoretical research as well as experimentation with the materials and formats of one of Brazil's biggest parties, I propose to reread images and uncover themes such as violence or politically motivated action - and also the reasons that make us celebrate, questioning.

Bruna Amaro holds a Masters degree in Aesthetics and History of Art from the Universidade de São Paulo (USP) and a degree from the Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP). In her works, Bruna deals with themes such as carnival, religiosity and gender-based violence. Based on these themes, she uses material elements that she finds in the folk festivals of her home region and reflects on works that have already been canonized in art history.

Her most important exhibitions include:

– the group exhibitions
    “46º SARP – Salão de Artes Nacional e Contemporâneo de Ribeirão Preto”;
    “ESCAPAMENTOS/ESCAPEMENTS”, Sao Paulo/SP (2021);
    “MITA: Cosmologias da Diversidade/MITA: Cosmologies of Diversity”, São Paulo/SP (2021);
