Emerging from the Tunisian musical underground, Badiâa Bouhrizi is a powerful-voiced singer and songwriter who has it all. She incorporates her socially committed lyrics into her music, which is inspired by the neo-soul wave. She has developed her own style by skillfully combining jazz, soul, reggae and electronic elements with her sensitive, socially conscious and politically engaged lyrics.

At the age of seven, Badiâa started off as a soloist in a local choir in Tunis and later joined the Tahar Haddad choir which dedicated their work to classical Arabic music forms such as Andalusian muwashah and the North African Malouf. From classical Arabic she went on to explore rock covers with her band, Black Angels, and later with Tunisian Ethno-Rock band, Dayrib. Having studied musicology in Paris meant that she experimented with a wide range of genres, and began to dig deeper into her Tunisian roots, specifically the Amazigh Berber music of native North African inhabitants characterized by pentatonic scales and African rhythms.

Since the revolutions of 2011 Badiâa has shared her music on stage, delighting audiences in each show with the magic of the moment brought in by her interaction with the audience’s energy. Following more than a decade of music composition and production, she has proven to be a true hybrid of multiple cultural heritages that while drawing inspiration from African music, reggae, classical Arabic music as well as the new British scene, wishes to remain free of classification.

Workshop: Mightier than a trampled flower

As part of our curatorial focus MIGHTIER THAN A TRAMPLED FLOWER two workshops were held in the spring and late summer of 2022 with a small group of artists, curators and researchers. Participants were Yukiko Nagakura, Nadja Makhlouf, Margo Okazawa-Rey, Bruna Amaro and the curator Dami Choi for the facilitation. As a space to align, exchange and think together, these online workshops posed and probed a set of questions which weave the practices and the realities that the Curatorial Focus dwells on.

In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of Algeria's independence from France, “Moudjahidate* - women*, resistance, queer alliance” honours the commitment of women* fighters in the struggle for freedom and autonomy for their people and themselves. The exhibition creates a space for all women* who contributed to liberating land with their bodies, minds and power.
