This call is aimed at artists working on their own processing of ancestral technology, of embodied memory in performance practice, activism and cultural work. Of particular interest are reflections that engage in and reflect on social and ancestral conversations in novel ways, as well as other approaches to futurism, modernity, preservation and invocation. We have titled the theme of the residency “Rituals of Real(ease)”.

In the spirit of the program's emphasis on biomythography and ancestral reconnection, the main focus will be on honoring the remnants of ritual through kinaesthetic and vocal intimacy, engaging the power of a collective creativity developed amidst political and social resistance in a time of social distancing. We are looking for innovative ways of presenting the processes of ritual preservation, production and performance, while creating a safe space for the collective that emerges from the process.

who can apply
The residency is aimed at BIPoC individuals and collectives, for healing and engaging the poetic and political imagination. The previous edition of Ancestral Body Noise centered narratives from Africa and the African Diaspora. For this edition, we are broadening the call and welcome applications from anyone with biographies linked to countries colonized and / or oppressed by Western imperialism. Both individual practitioners and groups of two people are welcome to apply. The group in residence will be 5 practitioners in total.

The facilitator and curator for the project will be Gugulethu Duma.

Timeframe & requirements:
From January 15th for a 6-week process. The collective would meet once a week for 5 hours, and each individual will be required to be a part of one podcast interview for the Ancestral Body Noise archive and the collective would curate a series of performances to be shared with the public.

The residency is aimed at individuals and collectives of the BIPoC community to heal the poetic and political imagination and bring it into play. The previous edition of Ancestral Body Noise centralized narratives from Africa and the African diaspora. For this issue we are extending the call and are looking forward to applications from everyone whose biographies are connected with countries that have been colonized and / or suppressed by Western imperialism. Both individual practitioners and groups of a maximum of 2 people are welcome to apply. The residency will have a total of 5 practitioners.
