The time has come. Our street is being renamed.

We are incredibly relieved and are happy to have been part of the jury. The process of renaming the street lasted for many, many years - thanks to the work of organizations and people such as ISD, Africavenir, Tahir Della and Mnyaka Sururu Mboro as well as the Neukölln district parliament - it is now official: Wissmann becomes Lucy-Lameck Street.

Lucy Lameck (1934-1993) was a Tanzanian politician who became the first woman to hold a ministerial post in the government. Born into a farming family, she trained as a nurse before taking up politics on a scholarship and attending Ruskin College, Oxford. She first entered the National Assembly of Tanganyika in 1960 before she was elected to the National Assembly of Tanzania in 1965. With the exception of 1975 to 1980, she continued to have a seat there until her death in 1992. She is considered a role model. She has worked all her life to improve conditions for women in the country. Lameck, a legacy.

2021 can come.
