Oyoun's Tiny House is going on tour!
Between the end of August and mid-October, our Tiny House will be travelling through various Berlin districts. For one week at a time, we stop at different cultural places and institutions and interact with the surrounding urban space, the neighbourhood and local partners.
This week the Tiny House will be 5 minutes walk from Korea Verband (Quitzowstrasse 103, 10551 Berlin) away near the Birkenstraße subway station in front of the Peace Statue (Bremer Str. 41, 10551 Berlin) be stationed.
The peace statue commemorates and reinforces the struggles of women* who were sexually enslaved by the Japanese army during the Asia-Pacific War ("comfort women"). On the occasion of this year's Chuseok (추석), the Korea Association will celebrate the 3-year anniversary of the Peace Statue in Berlin-Moabit with the Festival of Stars* while addressing the Japanese government's political pressure to remove the statue.
You can expect an extensive programme with recurring workshops on podcasting with Hamam Talk, mixtaping with Maurice Leoni-Osionand photography with Queer Analog Darkroom, as well as pop-up exhibitions and performances:

⇒ Workshop | “The Home ReMixtape Archives”
w/ Maurice Leoni-Osion
For many of us, home is where we are born, reside, genealogically rooted, or establish a sense of belonging. However, this definition of the home is not always shared by a broader population, specifically marginalized communities, who, like everyone, should be accepted for instinctual birthrights to provide an inner structure/shelter to protect cultures, languages, loved ones, stories, dreams, memories, and futures.
The Home ReMixtape Artchives is a series of art workshops utilizing the creation of home mixtapes as an archival approach to document, protect and preserve untold stories centered around the home experience. Participants will explore mixed media; graff writing, illustrations, timelines, found sounds, interviews, audio recordings, songs, and music production to collaborate on a community mixtape. The goal is to provide a creative space for various voices to tell their younique stories while finding a cohesive rhythm amongst each other that celebrates future narratives from their neighborhoods.
The workshops will culminate in an interactive exhibition from 16 to 30 November 2023 at Oyoun, where the public will have access to the five editions of the Mixtape series, each representing a community archive from five districts across Berlin.

⇒ Workshops | “Seeing Others: Queer Portraits”
w/ Jasper & Sophie – Queer Analog Darkroom
The two workshops hosted by Sophie & Jasper (one at ZK/U and one at the Korea Association) explore how photography can serve as a tool/part of queer liberation. The power structures on which photography is based, both in theory and in practice, will be discussed together. A focus will be on the history of the camera in the context of colonialism and heteronormativity, as well as the resulting power differences between those depicted and those taking the photographs. What ways and possibilities could exist to queer, recode and deconstruct these power structures? Two workshops will be offered, which can be attended independently of each other (on September 24.9th at the ZK/U and on September 27.9th at the Korea Verband).
The second workshop at the Korea Association focuses on photographing each other. In the theoretical part, power relations as photographers are discussed and how they can be dealt with in a reflective way, as well as with what intentions we photograph others and how portrait photography can be made more participatory.
This workshop uses instant photography in a very practical way. The immediate physical presence of the images creates a tangible and unforgettable element to actively locate queerness in urban space. The participants can present the results at a group exhibition at the end of the Tiny House project.

Sat 30.9. 14:00-18:00 h
⇒ Pop-Up Event | “Archive-in-the-making for Statue of Peace”
w/ Spicy Ginkgo Collective
The project "Archive-in-the-making for Statue of Peace" aims to present the Statue of Peace as a vivid place of resistance and encounter for marginalized communities in Berlin on the 30.09.2023. With a one-day program in the Tiny OyoUnity project including a participatory installation in the Tiny House, existing relationships of solidarity and self-organization will be made visible, and open the space for new encounters.
The participatory exhibition will gather the work of political initiatives of marginalized, racialized communities, especially Asian diasporic groups, in collaboration with local initiatives, (post-)migrant (self-)organizations and community members. Through an open call prior to the exhibition, Spicy Ginkgo reach out to respective communities to share archival material for the exhibition: photos, videos, and audio recordings of past events serve to document and highlight the significance of the Statue of Peace as a common reference point of solidarity in Berlin.
At the day of the exhibition visitors are encouraged to leave their own thoughts, feelings, comments, and draw new connections between the exhibition elements and participate in the creation of an archive-in-the-making.
The installation invites visitors to engage with the aura of the Statue of Peace with curiosity and imagination. Through creative writing exercises, the installation encourages visitors to – literally – put themselves in the statue's perspective: what does it witness? What does she long for? Who are they missing?
The open call can be found here
Tickets: Free admission (no registration required)

About the Korea Verband
The Korea Verband is a non-profit organisation that emerged in 1990 from the democracy and solidarity movement for Korea. It uses diverse forms of action to campaign for human and civil rights, both in divided Korea, in Europe, and locally in the neighbourhood. It questions power structures from a postcolonial, feminist and intersectional perspective and works with different target groups such as young people, adults, activists, multipliers, but also political decision-makers. The Korea Association is active in a number of alliances and has a large network.
The focus of the work is currently the awareness and education work on the "comfort women" who were sexually enslaved by the Japanese military during World War II. For this purpose, the action group "Comfort Women" was founded in the Korea Federation. In September 2020, the "Trostfrauen" action group erected the Korean peace statue in Berlin-Moabit, which has since become a strong symbol of decolonial remembrance culture and against sexualised violence, and an important place for Asian diasporic communities in Berlin.
