THE PATH: A Participatory Public Art Project - Exhibition + Installation + Event Series

September - 15. October

[German below]

What do we experience in the metropoles of today's world and what do the metropoles experience? Amidst all the flux of migration, gentrification and rapid urban change is the metropole able to contain us and vice versa? What if the paths we take every day start from nowhere and lead nowhere? Is it a togetherness that we experience or is it an 'otherness' with a potential? What are the results, alternatives, solutions and what can art's role be in this process?

THE PATH is a multidisciplinary art project that problematizes the relationship between the metropole and the individual from a queer, feminist point of view. Inspired by the pedestrian bridges over the highways in İstanbul, the participatory public installation at Tempelhofer Feld by Umut Azad Akkel invites the participants to an experience simulating the complex character of our co-existence with / within / despite the metropole.

Similarly, the events designed and planned around the conceptual basis of the installation, that will take place at Tempelhofer Feld and at Oyoun will create an experiential and intellectual hub for analyzing our complex being within / with / despite the metropole. The overall perspective of the series of events will be approaching the theme from multiple views and raising critical questions about all its complexity. The focus will be Berlin and Istanbul as two interrelated metropoles and the flux of migration between the two with its implications and possible historical as well as recent meanings.

We invite you to join our multidisciplinary program from September 9 to October 15. The program includes an exhibition, artist talks, artist walks between Oyoun and Tempelhofer Feld, panel discussions, film screenings, music performances, and art and theater performances - see the events listed below. We look forward to seeing you!

THE PATH: A participatory public art project

What is the attraction of urban life? How does it feel to live in a city that is constantly expanding and changing? What does this mean for individual existence? What struggles and challenges do the residents see themselves confronted with on a daily basis? How can we shape urban space together from a queer * feminist perspective?

THE PATH uses interdisciplinary artistic forms to present utopian visions as well as dystopian worries. Radically personal perspectives on concepts of urban transformation, gentrification and the associated dynamics of alienation and discrimination are explored against the background of neoliberal politics.

At the same time, it is an autobiographical reflection of the experiences that the artist Umut Azad Akkel had in Istanbul over the years. The existential struggle he experienced led him to the metaphor of “The Path”, which “begins from nowhere and leads nowhere”. With the project, Akkel conceptualizes his critical examination of the city by looking from Berlin to Istanbul. The two cities are closely linked throughout history by three major migratory movements. The latter, the so-called New Wave, includes many young, especially queer people, who came to Berlin from Istanbul due to the political situation in Turkey. “The Path” serves precisely as a platform for solidarity, exchange and urban artistic rethinking. Together, a publicly corresponding space of experience is created that actively involves various communities from the neighborhood.

The series of events offers an extensive program. It includes talks and tours with the artists between Oyoun and the installation, an exhibition, panel discussions, film screenings, concerts, performances and theatrical productions - see full program above.

All events can be attended free of charge. However, due to the Corona regulations, registration is required for each event. More information will come soon.

Please note: The prerequisite for entry to the event is a daily, negative corona test or proof of vaccination / recovery. In the Oyoun there is a mask requirement until further notice. You can find more information about the hygiene concept here: oyoun.de/hygienekonzept

We look forward to seeing you there!
