Nesrine Belmokh (jazz musician)
The jazz musician Nesrine Belmokh unites the musical world of the Mediterranean from North Africa to Southern Europe and draws on their Algerian and French roots. She manages seemingly effortlessly to combine influences from jazz and classic with soul and Arabic-Andalusian elements in an extremely artful way, whereby the sum of her individual and diverse musical experiences is clearly decisive. Notably, Belmokh has worked with legendary conductors such as Lorin Maazel and Daniel Barenboim, and performed with Cirque du Soleil on international tours. With a vulnerable, sometimes sonorous voice and her virtuosic and charismatic cello playing, she takes us lightly into distant worlds of sound.
her debut album Ahlam In 2018, she took her from festivals and concert halls in her adopted home of Spain to classical houses and countless other performances in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Turkey and Romania. Her solo album was released in 2020 Nesrina. Belmokh is also on albums by Jean-Sébastien Simonoviez (among others in the string quartet Quatuor Opus 33) and with the Jazzrausch Bigband technical to listen.
BABYLON ORCHESTRA (Orchestra)
BABYLON ORCHESTRA is a young Berlin ensemble for urban Middle Eastern music - consisting of around 15 musicians and singers from Syria, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Russia, Italy, France, Kurdistan and Germany. Mischa Tangian and Sofia Surgutschova came up with the idea of founding it in early 2016 when they were looking for a very personal answer and reaction to a changing world with new forms of cultural interaction.
The aim of the orchestra is to promote artistic exchange between the musical cultures of the Near and Middle East and the musical cultures of Europe. The ensemble develops a repertoire that harmonises a connection between traditional Middle Eastern music and contemporary modern music with urban elements of the Berlin music scene. The focus is on contemporary compositions by composers who write for the Babylon ORCHESTRA or adapt their existing works to the cast. In addition to original and new compositions, there are also arrangements of well-known and traditional pieces for the concert repertoire.
The Babylon ORCHESTRA Debut Album Get it Here! made it onto the top list of the German Record Critics' Award!
