The Syrian uprising and the war that followed are perhaps among the best-documented visual events in modern history. There are harrowing images that have burned themselves into people's psyche. The picture of Aylan Kurdi lying lifeless on a Turkish beach. Drone images of bombed Syrian hospitals and cities. But that's not all that defines Syria, and for many Syrians these will never be the images that define a country or a generation.

This exhibition with 10 Syrian photographers is intended to enable the start of a debate and provide an insight into the personal perspective of Syrian photographers who captured some pictures of their country before and during the conflict. In the age of disinformation, breaking down images and examining the context in which they were captured has never been more important. The exhibition is therefore intended to create space in which the photographic process and the ethical questions arising from it can be discussed and in this way the conversation about Syrian photography is encouraged.

On Thursday, October 7th, the ceremonial vernissage of the photo exhibition "LOOK AT ME: 10 Scenes from Syria" will take place in the Oyoun, followed by a discussion. Please take some time before the discussion to let the photos of the photographers work on you. (Foyer on the 1st floor)

Guevara Namer (Moderator) is a photographer and documentary filmmaker in Berlin. She began her artistic work in 2005 in Damascus, the city of her birth. In her work, Namer deals with the topics of identity, feminism and exile and was supported by several international organizations.

Mohammed Badra (Guest / Panelist) is a Syrian photographer from Douma and lives in Paris. There he studied architecture and worked as a paramedic before turning to the camera in 2012.

Ameer Alhalbi (Guest / panelist) was born in Aleppo and now lives and works as a photographer in Paris. In 2019 he graduated from Speos School of Photography. At the World Press Photo 2017 competition, he was awarded 2nd place for "spot news". His work has been awarded several international prizes.

Artino (Mohammed Abdullah) (Guest / Panelist) was born in Damascus. In 2011 he joined the uprising in Syria and documented the Syrian revolution as a war photographer for over two years. He worked in various advocacy and archive initiatives such as "The Syria Campaign" and "Mnemonic".
