FRATZ Festival: KOLOFU (2+)
May 18, 2022 09:30 - 10:00
Performance by KiNiNso Koncepts (Nigeria)
When it comes to people, colors often have judgmental and negative connotations. The global attributions based on skin colors such as black, white, red, yellow, ... are absurd, discriminatory and deprive us of the joy of the beauty of colors. The team of KOLOFU did not want to accept this state of affairs and asked himself: »Can colors just be beautiful? Just beautiful and nothing else?” A performative play of colors with plates, spoons, straws and wind creates a unifying and fascinating theater experience for children, adults and performers. They show that all people can live and play together.
In 2017, KiNiNso Koncepts was already invited to FRATZ International with the production of Sandscapes. At that time, the artists were denied the necessary visas, which triggered a wave of protest. In 2019, Joshua Alabi was a guest at FRATZ as a festival observer and symposium participant. We look forward to continuing the working relationship with this year's guest performance.
KOLOFU is one of three productions that emerged from a FRATZ laboratory on the subject of SKIN TONE. As part of FRATZ International 2020, the group conducted research on skin color, bleaching and toning, colorism, racial discrimination, and identity. In addition to KOLOFU from 2 years, Cream Body was created, a comedy for adults and Skin, a work for children from 6 years.
KiNiNso Koncepts is a storytelling, film, theater, performance and education company. Their goal is to convey relevant messages through innovative performance and storytelling techniques in conjunction with intensive exploration of their own cultural roots and traditions. The artists repeatedly question the status quo in their work. In Nigeria and worldwide they have already trained over 1000 people and built up a large network of young artists. Joshua Alabi, founder of KiNiNso Koncepts, leads local and international projects in Africa and Europe. Amongst others he has written, produced and directed plays for the British Council/UKAID, the European Union, the Goethe Institute and the Mac Arthur Foundation.
