The Significance of the Nakba in Palestinian History and for Palestinian Identity - Book Discussion and Maqam Session

Nahed Awwad invites you to a book talk “Palestine and the Palestinians. A story from the Nakba to the present " with the author dr Muriel Assenburg and the publicist Kristin Helberg .

The focus of this book talk is the question of the significance of the Nakba - the flight and expulsion of around three quarters of a million Palestinians from 1947 to 1949 - for Palestinian society in the past and present. The Palestinian lute player plays in the second part of the evening Bakr Khleifi. The evening is rounded off with a small reception.

dr Muriel Assenburg (Scientist, author, panelist) 
Dr. Muriel Asseburg is a Senior Fellow in the Africa and Middle East research group of the Science and Politics Foundation (SWP) in Berlin. She is primarily concerned with conflict dynamics and peace efforts in the Levant (especially Israel / Palestine and Syria), German, European and US Middle East policy as well as questions of state building, political reforms and security in the Eastern Mediterranean. Asseburg studied political science, international law and economics at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, where he received his doctorate in 2000 with a thesis on "Palestinian state and nation building in the interim period". She has lived, studied and worked in the USA, Israel / Palestine, Syria and Lebanon, among others. Twitter Website

Kristin Helberg (Journalist, presenter) 
Kristin Helberg, born 1973 in Heilbronn, studied political science and journalism in Hamburg and Barcelona. From 1995 to 2001 she worked at the NDR in Hamburg. In 1997 she was awarded the Axel Springer Prize for young journalists in the radio category. In 2001 she went to Damascus, where she was the only officially accredited Western correspondent for a long time. Until 2008 she reported from Syria on the Arab and Islamic world for the radio programs of ARD, ORF and Swiss radio and television SRF as well as various print media. Today she works as a freelance journalist and Middle East expert in Berlin. Website

Bakr Khleifi (Musician, lute player) 
Bakr Khleifi, born in Jerusalem, began his musical training very early, initially with the violin at the age of 4, and switched to the oud (lute) at the age of six. He studied with various oud masters, including Ahmad al-Khatib, Simon Shaheen and Samir Joubran. At times he played in the West Eastern Divan Orchestra as a double bass player. Khleifi has a bachelor's degree in world music and a master's degree in double bass. His music reflects various disciplines, in particular oriental maqam music and classical western music. Nahed Awwad (Filmmaker, curator, organizer)
Nahed Awwad is an independent Palestinian filmmaker and film curator based in Berlin. She has been working in the film and television sector since 1997. Awwad graduated from the European Film School in Denmark and has since released eight films (experimental, short and feature-length films) including "25km", "Going for a Ride?", "5 minutes from home" and "Gaza Calling" all of which have been carefully researched. The ethos of Nahed filmmaking is to create an intimate approach to the people. In 2020 she was co-curator of the photo exhibition "Eyes of Gaza". Facebook Website
