BECOMING ALMAN

In conversation with Elif Çelik

Becoming Alman: Podcast

In this episode of Oyouniverse we welcomed artist Elif Çelik to our studio. Elif is one of four artists in the Becoming Alman project, a performative exhibition centered around the theme of citizenship. This episode, hosted by Linda Hamoui, is about identity, art as politics and belonging.

Elif Çelik was born in Ulm in 1997 and has been studying Fine Art at the Stuttgart Art Academy since 2016. She is currently in Alisa Margolis' class.

In her work, she shows how extrinsic conditions in her social environment unbalance or manipulate the orientation process of her German-Turkish identity. As a Muslim woman, she tries to open a discourse with her painting. She wants to confront viewers with the fact that they and other people in Germany are constantly being watched because they don't fit into the norms of mainstream society.
