Profile

Ammar Obaid

Ammar Obeid, storyteller, screenwriter, director, filmmaker from Syria, graduated from Damascus University in 2015 with a degree in Japanese Studies. Since 2017 he has lived and worked as a cultural manager, filmmaker and curator in Berlin. In 2020 he was a Fellow of the “Cosmopolitan Berlin” program of the Senate Department for Culture and Europe in Oyoun.

Ammar's work mainly focuses on complex issues related to migration, integration and trauma. He is also researching the connections between Arab and Japanese culture, for example in his project, developed together with Oyoun, about an Arab-Japanese love affair. In addition to short films and video art projects, his artistic and creative work also includes a documentary film in which he processes his personal experiences with war and flight. In this film he shows in an impressive way how difficult his way from Syria to Germany was and what role the media can play for refugees. For Ammar, a smartphone made it possible to document his escape, which opens up a very personal perspective for the audience.
